Maxwell Street Market and United Center

Hi everyone! The blog is a bit abandoned lately but I don't have all the time I'd like to do things I want and go to places I still want to visit. Christmas in the meantime, travelling, crossing the ocean and being with my family are the things that have kept me busy. My work is still the main reason why I'm so busy, but still I'm very thankful to have it! I love it!
Even though Sunday is our only free day we still try to go to places that are on our Chicago list and surroundings. This time we went to the "Maxwell Street Market" two weeks ago.
It is an open market where emigrants especially have tents to sell food and other stuff. It is run by Mexican people mainly, but years ago it was also run by Polish or Bulgarian people.
We discovered this market watching a TV program in "Food Channel" about Mexican food. We discovered "Xoco" watching the same program and they also say that in this market you can find some of the most authentic and good tacos in the US.
The neighborhood where the market is locates is kind of sketchy, so I wouldn't recommend going there at night or alone :). It is not too big and to be honest, I must say that I was disappointed. Probably it is due to the TV program I watched. Everything looked nicer on TV and then when you see it, the real thing is not as expected.
The tents didn't have anything very special, some clothes, tools and some deco stuff. I liked a mini shop of "sombreros mexicanos" of all kinds and a shop of dry fruit. I bought dry mango, pineapple and kiwi, very nice!

We arrived there around noon and we started looking at the shops and we started the search of the tacos de pastor!! I have to say again :) that the cooking tents were not very clean, but since the best tacos of Chicago were there, we went to the stand with the longest queue :) Here you see me waiting to eat tacos from Rubi's tacos.

Thomas haciendo cola :) Thomas waiting at the queue.

Even though the environment was not the ideal :) everything pointed out that the tacos were prepared in the most traditional way. They were preparing home-made corn tortillas. You can see them on the picture and if you look carefully at the pan, just next to one of the tortillas, you can see a piece of meat that was used to grease the pan or maybe to give some flavor to the tortillas...hehe! The truth is that I didn't like much that detail, but maybe that's the way to do it.

After one hour waiting, yes, one hour! the cook wrote a note saying there was no more pastor meat (marinated pork) or beef tongue, so we ordered two tacos and a quesadilla of steak or "asada" as they call it. Quesadilla was exactly like a taco, but with a piece of cheese.

Aqui estamos los dos comiendonos los tacos. Here we are eating tacos.

To finish our visit we ate churros! I had a plain one and Thomas a churro filled in with vanilla. Those churros are very similar to the Spanish ones, but the dough is slightly different. I personally prefer the Spanish ones :), it is just a question of taste.
 Thomas y su churro! :)

After the experience of the Maxwell Street Market, I've decided that I prefer Mexican food from Xoco or Rocky's Tacos :)
From there we went to the "United Center" where the Chicago Bulls play. There is a statue of Michael Jordan at the door, I love Michale Jordan!! You can normally go inside the center, but the other day it was closed :(
I bought tickets for a LA Lakers-Bulls game, but it was cancelled and I haven't still decided if I want to go to another game or what, so we were not able of seeing the game zone.
What we did that day was taking pictures next to the statue :) You can see us below.
Maybe it wasn't the best taco ever and the statue is only that...a statue, but I still had fun that day!! See you soon!!
