Celebracion del premio Nobel de quimica 2013. 2013 chemistry Nobel prize celebration

Hace un mes exactamente, se celebro un acto para homenajear a Martin Karplus, uno de los tres premiados con el Nobel de quimica este año. Martin Karplus tiene un laboratorio en nuestro instituto y es uno de los cinco catedraticos con plaza permanente. Aun a sus 83 años trabaja entre Boston y Estrasburgo, aunque su ritmo no sea tan frenetico como años atras.

El acto fue algo politico, aun asi, fue emocionante y se dio un buen recibimiento a una persona con tanto talento y que tan merecido tiene este premio.

Despues de los discursos del presidente de la Universidad, de algunos politicos y de Jean Marie Lehn (Premio Nobel de quimica en 1987), se hizo un breve recorrido sobre su vida, muy interesante desde su nacimiento, ya que por motivos conocidos por todo el mundo, su familia tuvo que huir de su Austria natal y refugiarse en otros paises donde los judios no fuesen perseguidos.

Finalmente, Martin Karplus dio un pequeño discurso justo antes de empezar un sencillo cocktail con el que celebrar este premio que tanto orgullo ha traido a nuestro instituto.

Exactly one month ago there was a celebration in honor of Prof. Martin Karplus (2013 chemistry Nobel prize) in our institute in Strasbourg. Prof. Karplus has a laboratory in our building and is one of the five professors with permanent position here. He is 83, but still travels to Boston and Strasbourg for work, even though not at the same rhythm as years ago.

The event also included some political participation but it was still exciting and the important contribution to science of Martin Karplus was acknowledged.

After the speeches of the University president, some politicians and Jean Marie Lehn (1987 chemistry Nobel Prize), there was a brief presentation about Prof. Karplus' life. It was very interesting since due to political reasons, his family needed to escape out of Austria to other countries where jews were not prosecuted.

Finally, Prof. Karplus gave a speech and then we all joined a nice cocktail to celebrate this award, which was so important for our institute.

Voy con un poco de retraso. La ceremonia de entrega de los Nobel fue ayer, asi que en breve habra otro post para contaros como vivimos el evento por aqui ;)

I'm a bit delayed since the Nobel ceremony was yesterday. However, there will be soon another post to show you how we lived that moment here :)

Premio Nobel de Quimica 2013 en nuestro edificio. 2013 Chemistry Nobel Prize in our building!!

Tal y como os dije ayer, se acaba de anunciar el premio Nobel de quimica 2013. Lo han recibido Martin Karplus, Michael Levitt y Arieh Warshel por "el desarrollo de modelos multiescala para sistemas quimicos complejos". Martin Karplus trabaja principalmente en Harvard, pero tambien es catedratico en ISIS, el edificio donde trabajamos Thomas y yo. Es todo un honor para nosotros trabajar en este entorno donde 2 de los 5 profesores con plaza fija tienen un premio Nobel de quimica, Jean Marie Lehn y ahora, Martin Karplus.

El mundo de la ciencia es duro, hay que mudarse, echar de menos a mucha gente y hacer muchos esfuerzos, pero momentos como este lo compensan. Es pura pasion!!! Desde este pequeño rincon, mi mas sincera enhorabuena a los premiados por su gran contribucion cientifica.

As I told you yesterday the 2013 Chemistry Nobel prize has just been announced. Martin Karplus, Michael Levitt and Arieh Warshel just got it for their work in "development of multiscale models for complex chemical systems". Martin Karplus shares his time between Harvard and ISIS in University of Strasbourg, here in the building where Thomas and I work. It is such a great honor!! 2 out of the 5 professors here have a Nobel prize, Jean Marie Lehn and now Martin Karplus.

Science world is difficult, one doesn't make it for money, it's hard, many efforts, moving around the globe, etc, but moments like this pay off. From this modest blog I'd like to congratulate the awardees for their great scientific contribution.

Premio Nobel de fisica. Physics Nobel Prize

Si! Ya lo han anunciado, despues de casi una hora de retraso :) Francois Englert y Peter Higgs han conseguido el premio Nobel de fisica 2013, una maravilla y un premio muy merecido segun mi modesta opinion, por ser el descubrimiento mas importante del pasado año, toda una revolucion para la ciencia y un pozo enorme de sabiduria que va a abrir una puerta hacia un campo donde aun queda mucho por saber.

Yes! It has already been announced after being delayed for about an hour :) Englert and Higgs have been awarded with the 2013 Physics Nobel Prize. I believe it is a very fair choice, according to my modest opinion, for being the most important discovery of the last year, a revolution in science and an open door to a field where there are still many things to learn.

Premio Nobel de literatura. Mario Vargas Llosa

Estoy ahora mismo tan contenta que voy a dedicar un par de minutos para escribir sobre los premios Nobel de este agno, 2010. No solo estoy contenta por el premio Nobel de quimica para Suzuki, Heck y Negishi, sino tambien por el premio Nobel de literatura, para Mario Vargas Llosa. En 1982, el agno que yo naci, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, recibio el premio Nobel de literatura y el es mi escritor favorito. Este agno, otro escritor latinoamericano lo recibe y como diria el rey "me llena de orgullo y satisfaccion" jeje!! aunque estos dos escritores mantienen algunas discrepancias debido a sus ideas politicas, ambos se encuentran en mi circulo de literatura absolutamente sobresaliente. Me parecen merecidisimos!!!

I'm really happy about the Nobel prizes this year, 2010 and I decided to stop a couple of minutes to write about it. I'm excited about the chemistry prizes for Heck, Suzuki and Negishi, but now I'm even more happy about the literature Nobel prize for Mario Vargas Llosa.
In 1982 my favorite writer, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, received the literature Nobel prize and this year, another great Latin American writer got it. These two writers have already for years some intellectual fights because of their political ideas, but still, they are both in the circle of wonderful Latin American literature, absolutely outstanding. This is great!!
