Field Museum

Hola! Aqui escribo este texto sobre el ultimo museo que hemos visitado en Chicago, el Field Museum de historia natural.

Es quiza el museo mas grande de Chicago y suelen tener exposiciones muy buenas. Lo cierto es que no le dedicamos el tiempo que se merecia, asi que tenemos otra visita pendiente.

El dia de la visita compramos entradas para ver todas las partes del museo abiertas permanentemente y una de las exposiciones dedicadas a Genghis Khan, el gran emperador mongol. Habia otra exposicion de momias "Opening the vaults: mummies", pero no teniamos tiempo para ambas, asi que esa sera para la proxima visita.

It is perhaps the largest museum of Chicago and they normally have pretty interesting expositions. The truth is that we didn't dedicate enough time to visit the entire place, so we will come back for a next visit.

The day of the visit we purchased a standard ticket to visit the museum plus one of the expositions. We chose the one dedicated to Genghis Khan, the great Mongol emperor. There was another called "Opening the Vaults: mummies", but we didn't have time for both, so we'll do that one next time.

Aqui veis a Sue. Es un tiranosaurus Rex. No se sabe el sexo, pero lleva el nombre de la arqueologa que descubrio el esqueleto.

This is Sue,  T-Rex. The gender is unknown, it has the name of the archaeologist who discovered the skeleton.

Una de las areas estaba dedicada a la entomologia. Estas mariposas me encantaron, otros bichitos, no tanto!

One of the areas was dedicated to entomology. These butterflies were beautiful, even though I didn't like other kinds of bugs!

These pictures belong to the soil research center.

A parte de estas areas que veis en las fotos, visitimos una parte de Egipto y otra parte de mamiferos asiaticos.

Por supuesto, teniamos que echar la foto a la salida, las vistas desde alli son preciosas, al igual que desde el planetario Adler.

Apart from the pictures I've showed you, we also visited a part dedicated to Egypt and another one of Asian mamals.

We took pictures on the way out, the view from there is very cool. The same thing happens from the Adler planetarium.

Despues de la visita al museo nos fuimos a cenar a "The Gage". Era la segunda vez que ibamos por alli y lo recomiendo. El tipo de cocina es internacional, el local es moderno y el servicio bastante bueno. Todos los detalles, en un post especial que estoy preparando de restaurantes/bares de Chicago.
Nos tomamos un buen vino español :) con el famoso "putin" canadiense y delicias fritas de garbanzo. Despues pedi una hamburguesa de ciervo y Thomas, tomo pato.
After the museum visit we went to "The Gage" for dinner. It was the second time we visited that restaurant and I really recommend it. It has international food style, the place is pretty modern and the service is very good. All the details will come in a next post I'm preparing about all kind of restaurants/bars and other places in Chicago.
We had a bottle of nice Spanish wine :) with a plate of the famous Canadian "putin" and chickpea fritter delights. After that I ordered a venison hamburger and Thomas ordered duck.

Cuando ibamos hacia el restaurante pasamos por delante de la estatua de Marilyn Monroe, mide mas de 7 metros y claro, me tuve que hacer la foto :)
On our way to the restaurant we passed Marilyn's statue. It is more than 7 meters high and I had to take this picture, of course!

Fue un dia estupendo, uno de esos domingos, el unico dia que tenemos libre a la semana. La verdad es que fue una semana muy dura por otros motivos y ese dia fui capaz de desconectar y relajarme para disfrutar del dia, aunque bueno, los problemas siguen, pero eso si, durante la semana :)
It was a wonderful day, on of those Sundays we really enjoy our only free day. The truth is that it was a very tough week and that day I was finally able of relaxing and enjoying the day. Problems still continue, but I leave them for the week :)

Chicago auto show

Este evento sucedio hace casi dos meses, pero no queria dejarlo en el olvido :) Cada año hay una exposicion de coches en el centro McCormick de Chicago, un impresionante centro de congresos, realmente gigantesco, al sur de la ciudad.

Para ser franca, yo no soy una gran admiradora de los coches, pero bueno, una vez al año, si que me gusta. 

La exposicion tenia varias salas y aunque todo era muy espacioso, no era tan grande como otras exposiciones que hemos visto en Amsterdam o en Madrid.

Sin duda, lo que mas nos gustaron, fueron los coches americanos :)

This event happened almost two months ago, but I didn't want to abandon it :) Every year there is a car show at the McCormick center in Chicago. It is a huge congress center, gigantic at the South of the city. 

To be honest, I must say that I'm not a car fan, but it is ok to visit the show once a year.

The exposition had several rooms and even though the place was very big, the amount of cars was not as large as the one in Amsterdam or Madrid.

My favorite cars at the expo were the real American ones :)

Proposal!! :)

Hola a todos! Despues de este paron, vuelvo con algunas historias mas. En concreto, esta preciosidad, que ocurrio el dia de mi 30 cumpleaños, en la planta 95 del edificio Hancock en Chicago. El dia fue muy especial, toda clase de sorpresas en casa y en el trabajo y por supuesto, la mas grande a la hora de la cena :) Una limusina nos llevo hasta el restaurante, con las mejores vistas de Chicago y alli aun me esperaban mas sorpresas. Las palabras sobran, os dejo las fotos!
Hi everyone! I'm back after all this time with some more stories to tell you. Particularly, one of the most beautiful things that has happened to me in my entire life. Everything happened the day of my 30th birthday, at the 95th floor of the Hancock building in Chicago. The day was very special, many surprises at home and at work and of course, the biggest one at dinner time :) A limousine took us to the restaurant, with gorgeous views of the city and there, more surprises! I was speechless, here you can see the pictures!

Lago Michigan...congelado! Lake Michigan...frozen!

Hola! Este año creiamos que el invierno no iba a llegar, el frio matador se estaba retrasando, a pesar de que antes de Navidad las temperaturas llegaron a -12 C y que la media de estos ultimos meses no ha superado los 1-2 C. Todo eso es historia!! Ahora si que hay nieve, hielo, viento y frio!!

La semana pasada, creo que el jueves, las temperaturas bajaron hasta los -14 C, llegando a -20 por la noche :). Durante el dia las temperaturas iban bajando progresivamente y cada vez que miraba el termometro, habia algun grado menos. 

En la siguiente foto me veis preparada para caminar 15 minutos a -14C. El abrigo es perfecto, muy calentito. Todo a conjunto con la maxi bufanda que me hizo mi madre, el gorro y los guantes. A ello se le suma las botas de "North Face" que son a prueba de agua y nieve y andando!

Hi! We thought there wouldn't be winter this year. The terrible cold we had last year has been very delayed, even though we had a couple of days before Christmas when the temperatures dropped to -12 C and the average temperature these last months does not go above 2 C. All of that is history!! There is snow, ice, wind and cold now!!

Last Thursday temperatures dropped to -14 C, reaching -20 C at night :). Temperature decreased gradually during the day and every time I looked at the thermometer there was one degree less.

You can see me with all my equipment on the next pic. I was ready to walk 15 minutes at -14 C. My coat is perfect, warm and comfortable from the North Face. On top of that I wore my maxi scarf, my mom made it for me :) together with the hat. In addition I was wearing my water proof boots from the North Face too, completely ready!

Cuando hace mucho frio, el lago Michigan se congela. No en su totalidad, pero si una gran distancia hacia adentro. La verdad es que impresiona ver que el lago no se mueve y que las olas, con su forma caracteristica, estan congeladas!!!
Decidimos cambiar de camino para ir al super :) y bajamos un par de calles hacia el lago para verlo mas de cerca. 
Todas las casas que hay de camino al lago son espectaculares de grandes, con jardines enormes, con vegetacion y las dimensiones de esas "chozas" son increibles. Echamos un par de fotitos de esta casa donde se ve el hielo :) y donde tenian esas ranas tan graciosas en el jardin.
When it is super cold, Lake Michigan gets frozen. Not completely, but a lot of meters to the inside. The truth is that it is impressive, especially when the waves of the lake frozen keeping their shape, that's awesome!!
We decided to change our route to go to the store and we went two streets more to the East, closer to the lake.
All the houses around there are incredibly big, with huge gardens and trees. The dimensions of those "sheds" are amazing.
We took a couple of pictures of this house with big cones of ice :) and also these funny frogs in the garden.

Llegamos al lago, algunas entradas estaban cerradas, me imagino que por las condiciones meteorologicas, para evitar accidentes. Nos aproximamos lo maximo posible al lago caminando por el muelle y tomamos algunas fotos. Lo que veis detras de nosotros parece nieve, pero no es, es el lago congelado! Es impresionante.

En mi foto me estoy tapando las orejas porque el aire era muy frio y me hacia daño y claro, me quite la capucha para posar en las fotos :)

We arrived to the lake. Some of the entrances were closed due to the the weather and to avoid accidents, I guess. We get as close as we could to the lake and took some pics. What you see behind us looks like snow, but it isn't, it is the lake, which is frozen! Isn't it amazing??

Antes de irnos a la tienda caminamos por la nieve en los alrededores del lago y no pude resistirme a revolcarme un poco por alli y hacer angelitos en la nieve. Te tumbas completamente y luego mueves los brazos, para que parezcan las alas :) Me quede bien frequita! Mi abrigo me protegio, pero los leggings no...jeje! Las piernas se me entumecieron :)

Before leaving for the store we walked a bit more on the snow around the lake and I couldn't avoid playing on it and make snow angels!! You lay on the snow and then you move your arms to make the wings :). I was pretty cold after that, haha! The coat protected me, but not the leggings. My legs were hurting for some hours after that :)

Pita Inn

El primer fin de semana del año en Chicago lo dedique basicamente a trabajar, pero puesto que tambien hay que alimentarse, el sabado despues del trabajo nos fuimos a comer unos deliciosos y autenticos kebabs con nuestros colegas Tarik y Bilge. Era una cita que teniamos pendiente desde antes de Navidad, pero no pudo ser en ese momento, asi que para que esperar mas!

Pita Inn es un sitio cerca de Evanston donde se preparan toda clase de platos procedentes de paises de Oriente medio. Creiamos que era un restaurante turco, pero tambien hay comida libanesa, iraqui...

El caso es que a nuestros amigos les gusta mucho como preparan alli los kebabs y el shoarma :)

He de deciros que estos no son como los conocemos en España. No es un plato super lujoso, pero esta muy bien preparado, tiene buen precio y puedes comer hasta la saciedad.

Yo me pedi un plato con combinacion de varias carnes: pollo, ternera, preparados de varias formas distintas. Iba acompañado de ensalada y arroz.

We spent the first weekend of the year in Chicago mostly working, but since we also have to eat, we went for dinner with Thomas' colleagues, our friends Tarik and Bilge. We went to eat delicious and authentic kebabs and shoarma in Pita Inn. It was something we wanted to do before Christmas, but we couldn't, so we didn't want to wait anymore!

Pita Inn is a restaurant close to Evanston where Middle Eastern food is served. 

Our friends like how they prepare kebab and shoarma, so we trusted them :)

I have to say that they are not as the kebabs in Spain. It is not a very luxurious dish, but it is very well cooked, the price is good and you can eat a lot.

I ordered a combo of chicken and beef with salad and rice, delicious!

Tambien pedimos humus antes de comernos la carne y otra cosa hecha con berenjena, parecida al humus y que estaba buenisima! Perdonad que no se vean las cosas bien en las fotos, pero es que empece a comer y no me di cuenta!! Todo estaba acompañado de pan de pita, buenisimo!

We also ordered humus as an appetizer and another spread made of eggplant, I don't remember the name, but it was delicious. Everything accompanied by the home-made pita bread. I don't know if you can see it on the pictures because I started eating and I forgot to take pictures before :)

Para terminar nos pedimos el postre y una taza de te. Yo estaba esperando ansiosamente la hora del postre para comer baklava, que delicia, que dulce mas bueno!!! En Holanda lo soliamos comprar en una tienda turca, exquisito y el otro dia lo pedimos y tambien, algo nuevo sugerido por Bilge and Tarik, "kunefel". Un dulce buenismo hecho con una base de queso y hojaldre por encima, uhhhm!

I was waiting for dessert anxiously..Delicious baklava and tea were waiting for us. What a delight!! We used to buy baklava in Holland in a Turkish shop in the Kruistraat, absolutely delicious! Tarik and Bilge also suggested to try another sweet called kunefel. It has a base of cheese and pastry on top, uhhhm!

Despues de la cena pasamos a la tienda que hay al lado, Pita Inn shop. Los dueños son iraquies y muy simpaticos. Yo tuve la oportunidad de hablar un poco en español y tambien, de discutir un poco de futbol con el hijo del dueño. El era del Barcelona y claro, yo tuve que ponerme seria, jaja!

Es un supermercado pequeño y con productos turcos basicamente. Compramos queso feta, pan de pita, pan de pita frito, especias mas baratas que en otras tiendas, hojas de vid rellenas de verdura, humus y como no, baklava!! Yo aproveche la oportunidad para posar en uno de los pasillos. Al final, nos invitaron a una bebida :) Me encantaron los productos de alli, los frutos secos, los dulces y las especias.

We went to the Pita Inn shop after dinner. The owners are from Iraq and they are very kind people. I had the chance of speaking some Spanish and also to discuss about soccer. The owner's son is a Barcelona fan and I had to defend my team, Real Madrid, hehe!

It is a small supermarket with Turkish products basically. We bought feta cheese, pita bread, pita chips, spices (they were nicer and cheaper than in other shops), grape leaves filled in with vegetables, humus and baklava, of course!! I took the chance of posing for the picture in one of the shop isles. 

I loved the products there, nuts, sweets and spices. 

We were even invited for a drink at the end.
