Tienda de quesos holandeles. Dutch cheese shop

I have abandoned the blog lately, even though I still have too many things to write about!!
Last week we went to The Netherlands to visit our family. We are in Europe since March, but that doesn't imply that we are not moving around anymore, hehe!
We took some time to do some groceries and we entered in a cheese store, of course! I wanted to share a couple of pictures because I think this kind of shops are pretty interesting. In my case, I have to say that I already see them as something normal, but still the world of cheese is awesome to me.
My favorite cheese is "manchego cheese", but since we were in Holland we took a couple of pieces of "Oud Gouda", which is cured Gouda cheese with salt crystals inside, delicious!
I'll try to post more often because I know that lately some people have shown a lot of interest and it is one of my favorite hobbies!!

Comida alsaciana. Alsatian food.

Hola!!
Hi!! As you all know, we love eating, cooking and trying all kinds of restaurants :) Of course, being in Strasbourg, I have to talk bout Alsatian food. It is a mixture of the very traditional French and German cuisines. The meals are pretty satisfying, the ingredients are simple and the food is in general high in calories, hehe! However, they are all very traditional dishes and that is what we like the most.
There are hundreds of restaurants in the city and one can find food from different parts of the world, but a big number of them are Alsatian.
We have tried many of them and we are already making our list of favorites. So far, "Chez Yvonne" and "Saint Sepulcre" are the ones we liked the most, but there are other places where food as well as the environment are very nice.
Almost all the dishes are great, even though I still didn't try many of them, especially the ones with organs, something very used in Alsatian cuisine.
Here I post a list of the dishes we have tried so far, even though there are still many more on our list!!

Let's start with the foie. It is one of the star products since we are in the foie capital. There are specialized stores for foie and in many places they have their own homemade foie. I have tried small portions in a couple of places and it is delicious! I'm not a big fan of foie, but the one I tried was delicious! The one you see on the pic is from "Chez Yvonne", exquisite!!

Foie from Chez Yvonee.

There is a big variety of starters, but the tarte a l'oignon is delicious. It is served almost everywhere, but only in a few places they are able to prepare it in the perfect way! It is a kind of quiche with onion, bacon and egg, delicious!

Tarte a l'oignon

Of course choucroute is another typical dish. The most traditional consists of a bed of sauerkraut with sausages, bacon and other meat on top. There are places where it is served with fish and other kinds of meat.
I haven't tried it yet, but Thomas has. This meal is pretty satisfying and I think we'll only eat it once in a while.

Choucroute

One of my favorite dishes so far is "Bouchee a la reine" or "volavent". In Spain we eat them sometimes with something else on top, just like a snack. Here they are bigger and filled with chicken and veal meatballs, very soft meat. The meat is cooked in a creamy mushroom sauce. It is accompanied with noodles or Alsatian pasta, delicious!

The next plate is also one of my favs, even though it is not so new. It is chicken cooked with wine, typical French. Here it is prepared with Riesling, one of the most typical wines here.
It is also served in many places, but it is often spoiled by adding too much cream to the sauce. In the real good places, the sauce doesn't have cream and it is delicious! The truth is that we also have this kind of plate in Spain and I love chicken, with rice, sauce and with wine...it is the perfect meal for me!

Pork knuckles are also typical here. Thomas ordered this plate last weekend, it was very well cooked and savory.

Manitas de cerdo. Pork knuckles.

Ham is also served in many places, but it is not like the Iberian ham :) This one is oven cooked and it has herbs and bread around it. It is served with crudites.

Jamon. Ham.

In the next picture we are with several friends at Saint Sepulcre. We always take our visitors there. We had tarte a l'oignon and soup a l'oignon as starters, we had different main courses: bouchee a la reine, spare ribs, fromage blanc old style and ham. Delicious!

Alsatian dinner with friends.

Apart from the big meals I have just shown, there are many other things. For example, the famous tarte flambee or flammkuchen. They are similar to pizzas but with a much thinner bottom. They have a creamy sauce on top and the most common ingredients are bacon and onion, even though there are all kinds of tartes. One of the nicest ones have melted muenster cheese. Yummie!!

Tarte Flambee o Flammkuchen

Next I show a couple of curiosities. One if the so-called "tartiflette". If you want to have some calories you have to try this. It is a caserole of potatoes, cream, bacon and onion with tones of munster cheese on top and cooked in the oven. I ordered it once and I ate just a small portion...
The second curiosity is what my father in law ordered the other day: pork tongue, hehe! I have never tried it and I didn't try it the other day, but apparently it was very well cooked :)

Tartiflette

Lengua de cerdo. Pork's tongue.

Finally a couple of desserts ;) creme brulee and "ba ba au rhum" or a small cake soaked in rum. Happily for us, creme brulee is delicious almost everywhere we have ordered it, yay!!

Postre!!

Adios!!

This post is only the beginning of a series of posts since I'm sure we'll find many more interesting things to comment about!! Wine is something important to mention and some more curiosities!! Byee!

The Cellar, last time...The Cellar, la ultima vez

To say goodbye to Chicago and Evanston we went to our favorite restaurant in town: "The Cellar": http://www.thecellarevanston.com/
We've been there many times enjoying their delicious food since we discovered it at the beginning of our time in Chicago. Their cuisine is exquisite and to be honest, this is not an easy thing to find in USA, even though we have found many wonderful places.
This place deserves an exclusive post, but for now I'll just leave here my last memories in the restaurant. Last Friday we enjoyed our favorite dishes with our friends and we were invited to a great selection of their desserts. Thanks!! If you guys are in Evanston, visiting, working in campus or just around, I highly recommend this place. For us, the best place to eat, with no doubt.
Here you can see some of our last pictures, but a full post is in process.

Finally the picture with our favorite barman, Richard. He made us enter the bar to take a picture. Thomas has a "Kwaak glass". That's his favorite beer and the one he drinks always there. We ended up the night toasting with beer :)

The Rice Table

Yesterday we went out for dinner with Christina and Lyle. The restaurant we went is in Andersonville, a cool area of Chicago with many interesting bars and restaurants. We went to "Vincent", which is a Dutch restaurant, yes, exactly what you are reading, a Dutch restaurant :) I don't know exactly how is the food there since we went there for a tasting of Indonesian food. The event is called "The rice table" and it is celebrated every year in Chicago. The company rents a different restaurant every year and this time it was in Vincent. We bought the tickets online and went there to enjoy the food.

Llegando a Vincent. Arriving in Vincent.

The interior of the restaurant really reminded me of the Dutch restaurants. The decoration and the light was very Dutch and cozy, but it didn't let me take a normal picture of the food!
The menu consisted of many small plates to share based on all kinds of typical Indonesian food: fried rice with coconut sauce, chicken with ginger, spicy beef, tofu, sweet fries, salad with coconut, etc. I absolutely liked everything, the food was well cooked, a bit spicy but with a limit and everything very juicy.
Desert was also delicious, it was rice pudding, very similar to the traditional "arroz con leche" but more dense and with caramel on top. I also ordered a cocktail that was delicious, it had champagne and "Saint Germain" liquor, I hope to drink it soon again ;)

Here you can see how the food was served, even though the light was awful for the pictures.

We walked around the neighborhood after dinner and we found this cute horse :)

It was a great dinner: good food, laughs and friends to enjoy our last weeks here :(

Pancakes!

I love starting my Sundays like this!! With pancakes made by Thomas :) It is the only picture I have, it is not too artistic, but they were delicious!! The blue jar of condensed milk arrived in a package sent from my mother from Ciudad Real to Chicago :)

Big food portions.

If there is something that still amazes us of our American life is the huge food portions that are served normally in the restaurants. There are some exceptions in some more exclusive restaurants, but for the rest the amount of food is really incredible and people leave the place completely satisfied, I believe :) I have many examples, but this one is from today. The day was beautiful and we wanted to eat something enjoying the sun in a terrace. Here you can see my huge chicken salad with stripes of tortillas, something very common here in soups and salads :) Thomas ordered a burger and ate it in a record time as always, hehe! The best of all is that you can take home everything you can't finish so food doesn't go to the trash.

The taste of Chicago

Claro! Lo tipico!
I've been having problems with the blog already for two weeks. I wasn't able of uploading pictures and finally I tried using a different browser. It works like this, so I'm happy! Actually, the blog crashed when I had a lot of things to share :)
Two weeks ago we went to the "Taste of Chicago". A gastronomic festival celebrated every summer in Chicago. They offer all kind of typical American food :) Thomas went there in 2010 and he asked me not to have too high expectations since there were not many delicate things to eat, only fast food :) Of course, typical!!
It is celebrated in Grant Park and there are tons of food tents. There were not too many things that caught my attention. I thought there would be more American bbqs for smoking or some more elaborated dishes, but it was not like that. Apart from sausages, dogs, sandwiches and cheese cake there was not a lot more to choose. The good thing was as always the crowd, nice environment in the city center :) However, it is surprising that everything had such a high fat content...
There is always something to learn from every experience and this time we discovered what a "corn dog" was. I thought it was a sausage processed from corn-fed animals, as it normally is here, but it wasn't!! It is a sausage which procedence is unknown, battered and placed on a stick!! Nice explanation!!
We tried several things we liked as for example Brazilian bbq sausages, pulled pork sandwiches, corn dog and of course, Chicago style dog :) We had frozen banana covered with chocolate, but to be honest we didn't like it that much.
Apart from the food I love the mix of people we found. Let's say most of them were not the most refined of Chicago, but I love that, viva la gente!! I love seeing all kind of people in all kind of places :)
Here you can see some pictures we took. I had a great time despite the 100 F...I'm looking forward to go to one of these events again :)

After the food festival we stopped by Benningans to get some drinks and apparently, Thomasito was still hungry. He ordered a piece of cheese cake with American proportions :)

Monkey bread

Hoy he estado cenando con Christina y Lyle, siempre cocinan taaaan bien!!
I've been eating dinner with Christina and Lyle tonight. They always cook soooo well, everything they make is delicious! I wanted to write this post to talk about monkey bread :) It is a sweat made with normal dough, which is cut in small pieces and then converted into balls. The balls are dipped in butter and covered with brown sugar. After this the dough needs to raise and then the balls are baked. I guess this is known here in USA but if anyone in Spain wants to cook it please let me know, I'll be happy to taste it! I've enjoyed it a lot, especially being with Lyle and Christina. I've spent a lot of time alone lately since Thomas is in Korea, so I had a very nice time. Here you can see the picture of Christina with the monkey bread and I also leave here a link for a recipe, even though I don't think it is as good as hers.

During our week on the island we also visited the capital, Palma de Mallorca. It was the third time I was on the islad, but the previous times I was on a trip celebrating the end of my studies and I didn't enjoy tourism so much :)
We stayed there for only half a day so we visited the cathedral, the center and some other nice streets. I had already gone to the Bellver castle and other interesting places previously.

Detalle de Gaudi. Gaudi's detail.

In 2001 the artist Miquel Barcelo built one of his pieces in a part of the cathedral. It is dedicated to the sea and it is made in a kind of plaster material. The figures were made from the outside of the walls, creating the desired shapes to the inside. This piece of art is pretty controversial since it doesn't really match with the Gothic style of the cathedral. There are many opinions about it but I personally find the construction very interesting, but not for the cathedral. I don't find the connection between this part and the rest of the cathedral.

After visiting the main part of the cathedral, the chapels and the museum we went to the court yard. This is my favorite part of the churches in general, I love them!

After visiting the cathedral we went walking to the Plaza Mayor. It is very special, it is not a big or rich main square, but it has a Mediterranean touch of color and life, I really like that. There were also pretty amazing human statues.

From here we looked for a typical Mallorcan place to enjoy traditional Spanish food, not too touristic (and/or German...). We had "raciones" of the most typical food in a bar decorated in the classical bull-fighting style (I hate bull-fighting, but the place was like that...).

We finished the day buying an ensaimada, a typical Mallorcan sweet. It is delicious.
The day was too hot and humid, but I don't care about that :) I love visiting places, knowing the culture and the gastronomy. We had a very nice day!
