Eindhoven II (version española e inglesa)

¡Hola! En mi último post os hablé de como decidir venir a Holanda y os mostré algunas de las cosas más emblemáticas de la ciudad, aunque me quedan muchísimas cosas por enseñaros que espero hacer en los siguientes posts.

Hello! In my last post I told you why I decided to come to Holland and I showed you some of the most representative things in the city, but there are still lots of things I would like to tell you, so pay attention to the next posts.
Cada vez que me pongo a escribir, me arrepiento de no haber empezado antes este blog y es que ahora, las cosas de aqui no me sorprenden tanto ya, pero al principio si que me causaron "curiosidad".
Every time I start writing I regret I didn't start this blog before because now, I´m not as surprised as I was when I arrived here, when I was feeling "curious" about many new things.
Al venir de estancia Eindhoven, el alojamiento se puede arreglar muy facilmente gracias a la buena organizacion de la Universidad de aqui. La Universidad Tecnica de Eindhoven ofrece la posibilidad de vivir en estudios, casi todos bastante nuevos, donde hay varias modalidades posibles: un mini-apartamento con cocina y bano propio, un estudio con bano propio y cocina compartida o estudio con cocina propia y bano compartido. Ademas, para parejas con ninos tambien hay apartamentos algo mas grandes. El precio oscila entre los 375 euros a los casi 600 por mes, pero es mucho mas facil que buscar algo por ti mismo.

Finding housing when you come to Eindhoven´s University is relatively easy since the own University can arrange it. The TUE offers you the possibility of living in studios, more or less new, where you can find different options: mini-appartments with kitchen and your own bathroom, a studio with your own bathroom and a shared kitchen or a studio with your own kitchen and a shared bathroom. Moreover, for couples with children there are also bigger appartments. The price ranges from 375 to 600 euro and it is a quite easy way of finding housing.

Al principio y movida por lo megaescrupulosa que soy...por supuesto, pedi un estudio con mi propio bano...pero no!!! no habia!!! Oh Dios mio!! ahora que??? si esta sucio, si no lo limpian, que me dan arcadas todo el tiempo, que hago?? bueno, es lo que hay. Solo hay que compartirlo con una persona, con lo que si tienes suerte, nada tiene que ir mal. Al final, esta opcion en mi caso, fue la mas acertada porque encontre el mejor vecino que uno puede desear: Christoph.

At the beginning and because of I'm too scrupulous...I asked for a studio with my own bathroom, but that wasn't possible!! OMG!! and now what?! if it is dirty, if my neighbor is dirty, I even had nauseas when I thougth about it, but it was like that...In the end, this option in my case was the best because I found the best neighbour you can have: Christoph.

Hasta que no llegas al piso en cuestion, no conoces a quien va a ser tu vecino, por lo que la expectacion puede crecer considerablemente, asi que subiendo hacia el cuarto piso intente hacerme una imagen mental de una posible chica de otro pais con la que compartiria el bano, pero...gran sorpresa! al entrar en la habitacion, chocaron contra mi vista varios pares de zapatos, de hombre y gigantes!! el tio debe ser enorme, pense...uff! tiene pinta de ser muy serio y un medio ogro, pense. Efectivamente, cuando le vi y hablamos, era gigante, pero nada de ogro!!Cuando por fin le pude conocer, me pareció bastante majo y agradable y durante el tiempo que estuve allí viviendo no podría haber tenido un vecino mejor.

I don't know who is going to be your neighbour until you arrive there, so my expectations were increasing and increasing, so while I was going up to the fourth floor I tried to make a metal image of "a possible foreign girl" with I would have to share the bathroom, but...big surprise! when I entered in the room, I saw several pairs of huge shoes, male shoes and huge!!! I thougth, uf...he must be enormous, and serious and a bit like an ogre, haha! When I met him, of course I saw he was huge, but nothing compared to an ogre!! I could see how nice he was (is) and we had a nice friendship during the time I lived there.

Siempre nos llamábamos para ir al mercado y en cierta ocasión, me salvó casi la vida: cierto día, preparándome para ir a trabajar, me levanté y me fui a la ducha, cerré la puerta de mi habitación y con mi micropijama y la toalla me fui a la ducha. Al volver a mi habitación, la tarjeta para abrir la puerta no funcionaba...y allí estaba yo, chorreando, con los pelos enredaos, el pijama de florecitas y las chanclas...fuera de la habitación! menos mal que él lo oyó todo, se levantó y tuvo que ir a la oficina a recoger una copia de la tarjeta de mi habitación, que momentazo...el mismo día que rompí un tubo de RMN en el 500, justo 2 semanas después de llegar, pa no perder el tiempo!

We used to call each other when we were going to the market, just in case anyone needed something and once, he "saved my life": one day, I got up and I went to the shower, I closed my room's door, took my towel and I headed to the shower with my micropijama with flowers. When I went back to my room, the card to open the door didn't work, OMG! and there I was, soaked, with my nice hair, the flower pijama and the flip-flops...out of the room! Luckily he heard me, he got up and he had to go to the office to bring a copy of the card. It was a very nice moment...just the day I broke an NMR tube and everyone was waiting for me.

Después de unos meses, empecé a vivir en casa de Thomas. Aquí podeis ver un poco donde vivo. La primera vez que lo vi, como todo, me sorprendió, claro, era distinto a lo que estaba acostumbrada. Por supuesto, tuvimos que venir en bici, alrededor de 20 minutos y al llegar, como es normal en las casas holandesas, hay sitios para poner las bicicletas.Nuestro bloque es el que está a la derecha, pero es exactamente igual que el bloque que veis de frente y así es como estaba la cosa este invierno:

After some months, I moved to Thomas' house. Here you can see some pictures of the place I'm living. The first time I saw it, it was surprising, different from things I was used to see before, but still quite normal. Of course, we had to come by bike, around 20 mins from the center and when we arrived, I could find the typical bike lockers. Our block is the one on the right, but it looks exactly as the one you can see in the front. This is how it looked two months ago:

We live on the third floor, without elevator! more sports, but not so nice to bring the shopping up :)

A continuación, podeis ver algunas fotos de la casa. Al entrar hay un pequeño recibidor, de frente se pasa al salón, a la izquierda está la cocina y a la derecha el cuarto de baño. Aquí veis unas fotos del salón, con la lámpara que le gusta tanto a Thomas, todo en blanco y negro. Cuando nos mudemos podré decorar la nueva casa a mi gusto, jaja!

Here you can see some pictures of the house. There is a small hall, in fron is the living-room, to the left the kitchen and the bathroom to the rigth. Here there are some pictures of the living-room, with the huge lamp Thomas loves, everything black and white. When we move I´ll decorate the new house with more colours, haha!

El muñeco que hay al fondo es el maniquí con el traje de carnaval de Thomas. Cuando me levanto por la noche y lo veo en la oscuridad, me llevo cada susto...jaja!

This is the kitchen, really messy after the preparation of a big dinner. I´ll post something else about the kitchen because it is a very important place in the house.

Esta es la cocina, completamente hecha un desastre después de una cena con amigos. En próximos posts escribiré algo más sobre la cocina porque es un sitio muy importante en la casa.

This is the hallway to go to the bedrooms, there are some pictures made by Thomas' grandma. These are Esther and Gloria, posing for a picture as a memory of the house.

Finalmente!! la taza del water! esto sí que fue una sorpresa porque en Holanda la taza está separada del resto del baño y como es costumbre aquí, se puede encontrar fotos, revistas y un calendario con los cumpleaños, typical Dutch!

Finally!! the restroom, this was really a surprise because here the toilet is in a different room and it is normal here, you can find pictures, magazines and a birthday calendar, typical Dutch!

Me quedan aún muchas cosas que contar, como por ejemplo mis extraños vecinos de aquí, la bici, etc. Todo ello, en próximas entregas del blog de Ampowerflower!!!

Eindhoven (versión española e inglesa)

Corría el año 2007 cuando empecé a pensar donde podía irme de estancia predoctoral. Cierto día, sin comerlo ni beberlo, hubo en Ciudad Real un simposium sobre nanotecnología donde Albert Schenning (mi actual jefe) estaba invitado a dar una charla. Me gustó lo que presentó, había ciertas similaridades con mi trabajo, pude conocerle, hablar con él y ¡¡decidido, allá que me voy, a Eindhoven! sí, donde el PSV Eindhoven ("Indhoven" pronunciado en Spanish).
It was 2007 when I started thinking about a possible European country where I could develop a small project during my PhD. When I still was in Ciudad Real, a nanotechnology workshop was organized and Albert Schenning (my current boss) was invited to give a lecture in my University. I really liked his lecture and I found some similarities with my work in Spain, so I could have a meeting and talk to him and I decided!! I'll go to Eindhoven!! yes, the city of PSV soccer team!!

Durante unos meses todo fue un cúmulo de preparativos para organizar casa, proyectos, alguien conocido por allí, etc, hasta que el día 2 de junio de 2007 cogí un vuelo de Ryanair y llegué a Eindhoven...donde aún sigo!
For some months everything was preparing about the trip and the months I was going to spend in Holland, the new project, housing, trying to find someone known there...finally, the 2nd of June I took a Ryanair flight and I landed in Eindhoven...where I'm still living!!
No tenía ni idea de lo que me iba a encontrar, como sería la gente, la comida, las costumbres, pero bueno, pensé que dentro de Europa no podría ser tan distinto. Al llegar allí, lo primero que pensé fue que me iba a entrar una depresión: todo estaba gris para una loca como yo que le gustan los colores, llovía, las casitas eran pequeñas, encima al principio no encontraba la civilzación yendo desde el aeropuerto a la ciudad, en fin...que pensé que 4 meses serían muy largos allí, yo como siempre, muy positiva...
I didn't have any idea about what I was going to find there, how people were, food, traditions, but I thought that being a country inside Europe it couldn't be too different...When I arrived there, my first thougth was really depressive: everything was grey (for a crazy colourful girl like

me), it was raining, the houses were small and different, uff...I thought they were going to be the 4 longest months of my life, so positive...

En el taxi, mi padre ya intentó hacerse amigo del taxiste nombrándole los distintos jugadores holandeses que juegan en el Real Madrid, por supuesto, la pronunciación de los nombres no era ni parecida, con lo que lo dejamos pasar :)
Al llegar a la ciudad todo cambió un poco, era "koopzondag" el primer domingo de mes, cuando las tiendas están abiertas, no hacía frío y todo el mundo estaba en la calle, parecía bastante animado.

Going by taxi from the airport to the city center, my father already tried to become friend of the taxi driver naming all the Dutch soccer players in Real Madrid, apparently the pronunciation was not completely correct, haha! When we arrived to the city, everything changed to me, it was the first Sunday of the month, so it was "koopzondag" when all the shops are open. It wasn't very cold, everyone was in the street sitting in the terraces and it looked quite amusing.

Poco a poco me fui acostumbrando a un país distinto con otro ritmo de trabajo, distintos horarios, por suerte conocía a mucha gente nueva que me ayudó mucho a integrarme, etc. Hoy por hoy, es una ciudad que me encanta, es tranquila, como la ciudad de la que provengo y me he acostumbrado muy fácilmente.
Little by lillte I got used to this new country, with a different rithm of work, etc, but fortunately I met a lot of people willing to help me to integrate in the social life here. Today, it is a city I really love, is quiet, like the city I come from and everything worked very easily.

Vivir en otro país, pros y contras. Leaving abroad, advantages and disadvantages

Pensando en como empezar el blog, me gustaría hacer unas primeras reflexiones sobre la vida en otro país, así en general. Siempre recordando, que en mi caso, yo vivo en otro país porque lo he decidido y por otras circunstancias personales que muchos de vosotros sabeis. Con esto quiero decir, que no es igual que alguien que se ve forzado a abandonar su país en busca de trabajo y de una vida mejor.
Lo cierto es, que me encanta vivir en Holanda, por mi situación personal y por mi trabajo.
Antes de terminar mi doctorado en la Universida de Castilla - La Mancha, www.uclm.es, ya había estado durante dos ocasiones en Holanda en dos periodos de 6 meses. El primero fue todo de nuevas experiencias y el segundo, una vez más acostumbrada a todo, se puede profundizar y pensar en lo que más te gusta y en lo que no te gusta.
Por supuesto, echo mucho de menos a mi familia y ese es el golpe más duro. No me puedo quejar porque viajo con bastante frecuencia a ver a mi familia, de momento la conexión aérea es bastante buena y me permite hacer un vuelo directo en algo más de 2 horas. Sin embargo, siendo una persona muy familiar y casera, que ha vivido siempre en la casa paterna, el estar lejos de la familia se hace duro, aún más cuando sé que a ellos no les gusta la idea de que yo viva en otro país...es un punto que siempre me queda pendiente. Por otra parte, está todos tus amigos, a los que se echa en falta irremediablemente. Siempre se puede mantener el contacto en el mundo cibernético, pero nunca es lo mismo. Tus amigos se tienen que hacer a la idea de que no estarás allí de forma habitual y cada uno, tiene que hacer su vida, sus planes y salidas, en los que tristemente estás excluída y no por ningún motivo malo, sino porque simplemente "no estás" y no hay otro remedio...después, siempre piensas y a veces, te arrepientes de saber lo que te estás perdiendo día a día. En el laboratorio de Ciudad Real he pasado momentos maravillosos, momentos en los que todos los compañeros éramos una familia y donde se compartía todo. Pero siempre hay que avanzar y cada uno sigue su camino, espero que hacia sitios mucho mejores.
En cuanto a las partes positivas, por supuesto hay muchísimas. En mi caso, el trabajo es excepcional, las condiciones son estupendas y la gente que me rodea es genial. La oportunidad de trabajar en un grupo de investigación en la Universidad Técnica de Eindhoven, www.tue.nl, es hasta el momento, lo mejor que me podría ocurrir profesionalmente en el terreno de la investigación.
Además, si se tiene la ocasión de trabajar en un grupo tan grande como el nuestro, tan policultural y tan variado, se puede aprender muchísimo de cada persona, sus países, sus costumbres y sobre todo, aprovechar al máximo sus conocimientos científicos.
Tu familia y amigos siempre pueden visitarte durante tu estancia en el extranjero. Esto te da la oportunidad de vivir experiencias inolvidables con todos ellos, mostrarles lo que ya conoces, visitar cosas que aún no has visto, etc. Desde aquí, me gustaría agradecer a todos mis amigos y familia que me han visitado durante mi tiempo en Holanda y que espero que lo hagan cuando vaya a Chicago :)
Tomar contacto con el nuevo país en el que vives puede ser muy enriquecedor. En mi caso, es un país europeo, donde hay diferencias culturales, pero no tan chocantes como si cambiases de continente. Esto aún, no sé como es y tendré que esperar hasta dentro de unos meses.
Cuando llegué a Holanda, tuve que acostumbrarme a los cambios de hora para comer, la diferente alimentación, ir en bici...prometo ilustrarlo todo con fotos...
Por otra parte, soy muy afortunada de contar con mi pareja, que facilita muuuucho tu estancia en el extranjero, nunca es lo mismo si no está :).
En conclusión, mi experiencia puede valorarse como bastante positiva, siempre hay pequeños sinsabores que pueden olvidarse al poco tiempo y que se pueden ver compensados con otras cosas mucho mejores.

Thinking how to start writin in this blog, I'd like to talk in general about life in a different country. You have to consider, that in my case, I decided to move because of work and other personal issues that you already know :). It is not the same case as some people that are obliged to leave their countries looking for a new job, opportunities and a better life.
I really like living in Holland because of my personal situation and my work. Before I finished my PhD at Universidad de Castilla - La Mancha, www.uclm.es, I lived in Holland for 6 and 5 months in 2007 and 2008. The first time it is a completely new world of experiences and the second time, you can think more deeply what you like and what you don't like at all.
Of course, I miss my family and that is the hardest point. I can't really complain because I fly quite often to visit them. I'm very lucky there is a direct flight from Eindhoven to Madrid in a bit more that 2 hours. However, I'm used to live with my parents and stay in the house, so that makes it more difficult and also, it can be even more difficult if you know your parents don't like or support the idea of me living abroad.
Your friends are the other part. You also miss them a lot and remember all the nice moments you lived together and you can't have while you are abroad. Keeping contact is always possible thanks to the internet, but of course, it is not the same as being close together. Your friends have to get used to the idea that you are not with them, day by day, and everyone has to do their lives and planes, where you are excluded, not because they exclude you, but simply because you are not there...Sometimes you think about it and you regret missing a lot of moments with them. I spent an excellent time in my lab in Ciudad Real, we were all friends and we shared incredible moments, almost like a family. But those times finish one day and everyone has to start doing other better things. I miss them, anyway.
On the other hand, there are millions of positive things living abroad, Holland in my case. My job is exceptional, the conditions are perfect and people around me are great. The chance of working at the Technical University of Eindhoven, www.tue.nl, was the best professional opportunity I had in my work life as a researcher.
Morover, if you work in such a pluricultural group as the one I work for, you have the chance of meeting people from all over the world and know about their cultures, traditions, and of course, learn about their scientific knowledge.
Your family and friends can always visit you if they have the chance and you can live incredible experiences with them, showing them what you have already seen or visit together things that are still to see. For me, it was very important the visits I received during my time in Holland, thank to all of them, family and friends!
The first contact with the country can be very impressive. In my case, I have to say that I moved to an European country and I think it is not as shocking as moving to another continent. Anyway, I still don't know that and I'll have to wait some more months. When I arrived in Holland, I had to get used to the new times for lunch, dinner, new food, new traditions, going by bike...I promisse to illustrate it with pictures!
Of course, I have to admit that living with my partner makes everything a lot easier and it is never the same as if you are alone.
In conclusion, I can say that my experiences until the moment was quite positive, sometimes you can be a bit disappointed, but it can be compensated with a million of cool things that I'll keep on writing on this blog.

Hola a todos! (English version below)

Hace tiempo que se me pasaba por la cabecita empezar este blog para que todos podais seguir mis andanzas por la vida, jaja! En primer lugar pido perdon porque con este teclado no puedo poner tildes ni los signos de puntuacion espanoles (como podeis observar, no tengo enje), pero espero que nos podamos entender!!
Ahora que lo pienso, creo que es algo que deberia haber empezado desde que comence mi aventura holandesa, pero bueno, mas vale tarde que nunca :) y asi, contaros todo lo que he vivido durante este tiempo.
En realidad, la idea del blog viene de Thomas, pensando en nuestra proxima partida al otro lado del charco, a Chicago, como muchos de vosotros ya sabeis. Aunque la idea ha sido mas suya que mia, creo que solo yo (y no es por echarme flores) puedo darle ese toque de humor y alegria que me caracteriza, asi como de enfados y momentos de "mala leche" que tambien habreis notado en mi. Ademas, quien puede ser mas creativo que yo? quien lleva la camara siempre a cuestas? quien puede darle un toque de humor manchego a nuestras andanzas en Chicago? y a mis anecdotas en Holanda? bueno, pues todo esto lo puede hacer mucha gente, jaja! pero yo intentare poner toda la carne en el asador y escribir sobre todos los acontecimientos a mi alrededor. Hi everyone! (I'm not a native speaker, so sorry for my English)
It's alreay been some time since I was thinking about starting a blog telling about all my adventures, interest and anecdotes out of Spain. Actually, I should have started it when I came to Holland for the first time. This way, you all could have had an idea about my perception of life and work in a different country, always with my personal humor touch.
To be honest, this is not my original idea, but Thomas was thinking about a travel blog to post all our experiences once we go to Chicago in some months to start our postdoc in Northwestern University, but I thought that I can be more original and give a colour touch to our experiences and also, I can talk about my Dutch experience while we are still here. I'll try to keep you posted and informed and find a way of telling things in a funny and interesting way. I'll include pictues, songs and jokes together with our latest anecdotes and scientific stuff.
