Pancakes!

Me encanta empezar los domingos asi!! Con pancakes hechos por Thomas :) Es la unica foto que tengo, no es muy artistica, pero estaban buenisimos!! Como nota, la leche condensada, llegada en un paquete mandado por mi madre desde Ciudad Real con destino Chicago :)

I love starting my Sundays like this!! With pancakes made by Thomas :) It is the only picture I have, it is not too artistic, but they were delicious!! The blue jar of condensed milk arrived in a package sent from my mother from Ciudad Real to Chicago :)

Group meeting bingo

El otro dia, tomando como inspiracion los graciosisimos posts de "PhD Comics": http://www.phdcomics.com/comics.php, decidi hacer un "Group Meeting Bingo". Consiste en hacer un tablero con cosas que pueden pasar durante la reunion de grupo y tachar los aciertos durante el transcurso de las presentaciones :) Me quedo un poco chapucero, pero lo hice con mis compañeros cuando ibamos de Evanston a Chicago en el tren y despues de haber pasado un dia horrible gracias a mi asma y mis polipos, despues de haber recibido medicacion muy fuerte y de sentirme fatal. Momentos como este ayudan, la verdad :) Creo que logre tachar 10 cuadros, jeje! Algunas de las opciones eran muy graciosas, las reuniones de grupo son larguisimas y al final nuestro jefe, siempre dice: "necesito estar en tal sitio antes de las 8", por ejemplo, jeje! Esto en particular sucedio realmente el otro dia, aunque hay cosas que pasan cada vez que presentamos :) Al menos, nos dio un buen punto de diversion!

The other day I prepared together with my colleagues a "Group Meeting Bingo" based on the super funny posts of "PhD Comics": http://www.phdcomics.com/comics.php. It consists of making a board with possible "typical" things that can happen during our group meetings :) The one I made is a bit crappy, but we made it while going from Evanston to Chicago by train and after starting my day going to the ER thanks to my asthma, my nasal polyps and after getting very strong and nasty medication. I'm happy that moments like this happen to cheer up your day :) I think I made 10 points, hehe! Some of the options were very funny, like the one where our PI says: "I need to get out of here by 8", for example. This happens almost every time because our meetings are sooooooooo long that in the end he is late for his next appointment. We had a very nice time looking at each other while some of these things happened :)

Lunch time. Hora de la comida

Algo que echare mucho de menos son las comidas con mis compañeros. Al principio ibamos al centro Norris, despues a la sala comun del grupo hast que la renovaron, cuando hace buen tiempo salimos fuera  intentando pilla una mesa libre o simplemente echando a alguna persona que se sienta sola :) y otros dias, como hoy, comemos tristemente en la oficina, jaja! Lo mejor es la compañia :) aunque faltan varias personas en este grupo.

I'll miss lunch time with my colleagues! We used to go to Norris center at the beginning, then to group space until it was renewed, when the weather is nice we go outside trying to find a free table or just kicking out someone who is sitting alone :) other days like today, we sadly eat inside the office, hehe! The best thing is eating with them all, even though there are some people missing in this pic.

Big food portions. Grandes raciones de comida

Algo que aun nos sorprende de la vida americana son las porciones gigantes de comida que se sirven normalmente en los restaurantes. Exceptuando algunos restaurantes mas selectos, en los demas uno se puede ir rodando de alli, jeje! Tengo millones de ejemplos, pero este es de hoy, aqui veis la mega ensalada de pollo que he pedido; lo que lleva encima son tiras de tortillas mejicanas, algo muy comun aqui tambien en ensaldadas y sopas :) Thomas se ha tomado una hamburguesa en tiempo record, como siempre, jeje! Lo bueno de todo esto es que normalmente te puedes llevar a casa lo que no puedas terminarte, con lo que la comida no se tira a la basura.

If there is something that still amazes us of our American life is the huge food portions that are served normally in the restaurants. There are some exceptions in some more exclusive restaurants, but for the rest the amount of food is really incredible and people leave the place completely satisfied, I believe :) I have many examples, but this one is from today. The day was beautiful and we wanted to eat something enjoying the sun in a terrace. Here you can see my huge chicken salad with stripes of tortillas, something very common here in soups and salads :) Thomas ordered a burger and ate it in a record time as always, hehe! The best of all is that you can take home everything you can't finish so food doesn't go to the trash.

My setup

Enseñar de vez en cuando cosas de mi trabajo me encanta, jeje! En este caso quiero dejar en el blog algunos de los equipos que estoy usando en el trabajo. Este en concreto es una probe station y un equipo para medir propiedades fisicas, en este caso estoy haciendo medidas para estudiar materiales ferroelectricos. Un compañero mio (que ya no esta en el grupo) fue el encargado de montar todo esto y me entreno, ahora puedo usarlo y continuar mi proyecto. Me encanta! Pero que dificil es a veces...Solo dos meses para terminar este proyecto que espero me de buenos resultados!!

I love showing my setups from time to time in the blog :) In this case I want to show you the setup I'm using lately. It is a probe station coupled to a physical properties equipment. I use it to study materials with ferroelectric properties. One of the former members of the group was in charge of the setup and he arranged everything to make it work. I got trained and now I can use it freely for my experiments and one of my projects. I love it! Even though sometimes things are too difficult...Only two more months to finish this project, which I hope gives us good results!!

Art Institute of Chicago II. Instituto de arte de Chicago II

El domingo fuimos con el padre de Thomas al insituto de arte de Chicago, es el mejor museo de Chicago segun mi opinion. Ya hice un post sobre este maravilloso lugar aqui.

En esta ocasion pudimos disfrutar de nuevas colecciones y aqui os muestro la pieza que mas me gusto :) Me parece espectacular por el estilo, el color, lo retro, es genial! La obra pertenece al artista aleman Gerhard Ritcher y se llama "Woman descending the staircase" (Frau die treppe herabgehend, 1965).

Last Sunday we went to the Art Institute of Chicago with Thomas' dad. It is the best museum of Chicago according to my opinion. I already wrote a post about it, here.

We could enjoy new collections and here I show my favorite piece :) I think it is gorgeous, it has a unique style and color. Genius! It is called "Woman descending the staircase" (Frau die treppe herabgehend) by the German artist Gerhard Ritcher in 1965.

A pesar de disfrutar absolutamente de todas las exposiciones, hay algunas piezas que son  un autentico desproposito...(siempre segun mi opinion).

Even though I enjoy every single piece of the different exhibitions, there are some works which are completely ridiculous (my opinion, as always).

Stupp Open House 2012. Jornada de puertas abiertas del grupo de Stupp 2012.

Las jornadas de puertas abiertas de los distintos grupos de investigacion se estan celebrando estas semanas. En nuestro grupo hemos celebrado dos, una para ingenieros de materiales y otra para quimicos. He tenido la suerte de participar en ambos, este año y el pasado. El año pasado di una pequeña charla sobre los proyectos de energia del grupo y este año una pequeña presentacion sobre nuestros proyectos sobre materiales organicos ferroelectricos y un poster sobre los mismos. Lo mas divertido de todo, son los posters que los estudiantes de segundo año hacen sobre sus PIs (principal investigator). El de este año ha quedado genial!

The Open Houses for all the research groups in Northwestern are being celebrated these days. We had two in our group, one for material scientists and another for chemists. I could participate in the open houses last year and this one. Last year I gave a talk combining all the energy related projects of the group and this year I talked about organic ferroelectrics and I also made a poster for the chemistry session, it was cool!

The best of all are the posters the second year students make about their PIs (principal investigator). The one of our PI looks great this year!
