Thanksgiving 2011, double this year. Accion de gracia, fiesta doble este año

Y otra vez este año tuvimos el honor de ser invitados a no una, sino dos cenas de Accion de Gracias!

Christina, mi compañera y Lyle, su novio, nos invitaron a cenar en su casa, al igual que el año pasado.

Es una fiesta que me encanta, es entrañable, divertida y la comida esta buenisima!! He de decir que Christina y Lyle son ambos excelentes cocineros y que ademas, les gusta preparar cosas distintas cada vez y ademas, mas y mas ricas.

Uno de los hechos mas divertidos de la noche es que eramos 11 personas de 10 nacionalidades distintas :): dos españoles (yo una), un belga, dos suecos, una taiwanesa, dos indios, un canadiense, una americana y una irani. No es maravilloso?

Once again this year we had the honor of being invited to not one, but two, Thanksgiving dinners!

Christina, one of my colleagues and Lyle, her BF, invited us for dinner in their house as last year.

Thanksgiving is a nice party, I love it! It is familiar, traditional, funny and with delicious food. I must say that Christina and Lyle are both excellent cooks.

One of the funny facts of the evening was that we were a group of 11 people of 10 different nationalities :): two Spanish, one Belgian, two Swedish, one Taiwanese, two Indians, one Canadian, one American and one Iranian. Isn't it wonderful?

A las 5 y media de la tarde llegamos a casa de los anfitriones. El pavo acababa de salir del horno despues de 4 o 5 horas de horno y 2 o 3 dias de preparacion, inyecciones de caldo, mantequilla, hierbas, etc.

Junto con el pavo habia varios platos de acompanamiento: judias verdes con piñones, pure de calabaza, salsa de arandanos de dos clases, una cocinada por Christina y otra por Lyle, patatas asadas, zanahorias, arroz salvaje, gravy y stuffing, hecho con salchichas, trozos de pan y castañas. Todo riquisimo, yo comi un poco de todo, lo podeis ver en la foto de mi plato :)

We arrived there at 5:30. The turkey was just out of the oven after 4 or 5 hours of baking and 2 or 3 days of preparation with broth injections, butter, herbs, etc.

There were many side dishes as well: green beans, pumpkin puree, gravy, cranberry sauce of two different styles, one made by Christina and one by Lyle, baked potatoes, carrots and parsnip, wild rice and stuffing, made with sausage, bread and chestnuts. Everything was delicious, I tried a bit of everything. You can see it on the picture of my plate :)

Nosotros llevamos cava y vino blanco para acompañar y el resto de invitados tambien llevo algo para beber y/o comer.

We took cava and white wine to drink with the food. For dessert, we had the wonderful pumpkin and sweet potato pie of Christina, what a delight!

Despues de la cena hubo amenizacion a cargo de Eduard, con su juego de los circulos y las cruces y mas tarde jugando a "Tabu", chicos contra chicas :)

After dinner we played a game of "crosses and circles" by Eduard's intervention, hehe! and we played Taboo afterwards, boys vs girls.

Lo pasamos genial en compañia de gente estupenda, me rei bastante y lo agradeci...Ahora no se si habra una proxima cena de Accion de Gracias aqui en Chicago...aunque siempre puedo hacer una en Europa!!

We had a great night with wonderful people, I laughed a lot and I really needed it. I don't know if there will be another Thanksgiving dinner next year in Chicago...even though we can always prepare one in  Europe!!

La siguiente cena fue el domingo, a punto de terminarse el puente de Accion de Gracias. Esta vez en casa de una colega de Thomas, con ella, su familia y mas compañeros de Thomas.

Llegamos alli a las 3 de la tarde y habia ya una inmensidad de cosas para picar...Nosotros llevamos distintas clases de queso: manchego con membrino, Gouda, queso azul y brie. Aqui lo veis en la foto, junto con otros frutos secos, datiles, orejones, anacardos, humus y quiche. Buenisimo!

Por supuesto, tambien bebimos cava :) y buen vino.

The next party was on Sunday, the last day of the Thanksgiving break. This time in the house of one of Thomas' colleagues, together with her family and other colleagues.

We arrived there around 3 pm and there were already tones of things to eat. We brought different kinds of cheeses: manchego with quince paste, Gouda, blue cheese and brie. You can see it on the picture together with other nuts, dates, dry apricots, cashu nuts, humus and quiche. Delicious!

El pavo era bastante grande y tardo bastante tiempo en asarse. Junto con el pavo habia varios platos de acompañamiento. La familia que nos invito es de Turquia y ademas de ser muy generosos y amables, prepararon toneladas de riquisima comida turca.

Habia arroz con pinones, ensalada de zanahoria con yogur y cebolla, "black-eyed peas", falafel traido por Bilge and Tarik, ensalada, esparragos a la plancha, etc. 

David, un companero de Florida, trajo dos platos tipicos del sur, judias verdes con pan rayado por encima y salsa de champinones y "cacerola de batata" cubierta de nueces con azucar!

The turkey was pretty big and it took a long time until it was fully cooked. Together with the turkey there were many sides. The family who invited us is from Turkey and they prepared many Turkish side dishes. They are awesome!

There was rice with pine nuts, carrot salad with yogurt, black-eyed peas, falafel brought by Bilge and Tarik, salad, asparagus, etc. 

David, a colleague from Florida brought typical Southern sides: green beans and sweet potato casserole, with walnut topping!

Halloween 2011

Y llego Halloween y como no, teniamos que adaptarnos a la tradicion americana, eso si, mientras estemos en Chicago :). Es cierto que en Europa cada vez mas se esta tomando esta tracion y aunque es algo divertido y que no causa mal a nadie, siempre surge la polemica de estar americanizando todo, etc. Nuestra tradicion y la americana provienen del mismo origen y aunque a uno siempre le gusta que se adopten las tradiciones de nuestro propio pais, yo no creo que me hubiese disfrazado si hubiese estado en España, pero si que hubiese comprado buñuelos y huesos de santo, jeje!

De todos modos, aqui os enseño las fotos de la fiesta a la que fuimos, celebrada en casa de un compañero, Adam, tambien conocido como "Pepito".

Thomas y yo eramos probablemento los mas viejos de la fiesta, jeje! Pero bueno, la juventud tambien se contagia, asi que alli estuvimos un ratito, nada extravagante.

Mi disfraz, de bruja, lo cambie por el de "sexy diosa griega" del año pasado, con falda micrometrica, este año algo mas oscurito, pero original. Todo preparado en 10 minutos despues de trabajar!

Thomas se decidio por el mismo disfraz de romano del año pasado, con sandalias romanas y las piernas al aire. Ademas, contaba con su espada sentenciadora de justicia, jaja!

Halloween arrived and we had to adapt to the American tradition of course :), at least while we live in Chicago. It is a tradition that is celebrated more and more in Europe and even though it is very funny and nothing dangerous, there is always some discussion about taking all kind of American stuff and turn it into something European. We have our own tradition for these days in Europe, in Spain in particular and they come from a very similar origin. However, I don't think I would have dressed up if I had been in Europe. I'd have bought the typical Spanish sweets for this date "buñuelos" and "huesos de santo" hehe!

Thomas and I were probably the oldest people at the party, hehe! but youth is contagious so there we were! We didn't stay until late like real party animals or nothing though...

I dressed up as a witch, changing my "sexy Greek Goddess" costume of last year which was ridiculously short...This time, something more discrete and dark, everything arranged during 10 minutes after work on Friday night!

Thomas decided to wear the same costume as last year "the Roman emperor" with real Roman sandals and naked legs :). Of course, he had his incredible fighting sword!!!

Tortas! Xoco y Rocky's tacos

Hola! Desde hace tiempo estoy pensando en escribir posts sobre los restaurantes y sitios que mas nos gustan de Chicago y Evanston. De momento voy a empezar por un par de mejicanos! Arriba, arriba! 

Hay millones de restaurantes mejicanos, cadenas de comida rapida mejicana, taquerias, etc. De todos modos y aunque mucha gente relacione a españoles con centro y latinoamericanos, lo cierto es que yo no conocia mucho la comida mejicana. Aqui a la gente le encanta y es muy comun comer tacos y burritos.

Ademas de los restaurantes mejicanos, lo que mas me ha influido de todo ha sido Leonel, el estudiante del que fui mentora todo el pasado año.

Todos los lunes traia media torta, un bocadillo mejicano con miles de cosas dentro y todos lo mirabamos con mucho interes :) Ademas, le insistiamos para que organizase una comida en el restaurante donde el normalmente come esas tortas. Asi que por fin lo hizo hace unas semanas y aqui os enseño las fotos donde estoy con mis colegas comiendo torrrrtas!!

Hi there! I've been thinking lately about writing some posts about our favorite restaurants and places to go in Chicago and Evanston. For the moment, I'll start with some Mexican food! Arriba, arriba!

There are millions of Mexican restaurants, Mexican fast food chains, etc. However, even though I'm Spanish and we speak the same language, I didn't know much about Mexican culture or food.

The main factor for eating Mexican food is not only the existence of hundreds of Mexican places, but Leonel, the student I'm mentoring! (well, more during the last year).

Every Monday he brings the left overs of a huge sandwich, called torta, with all kind of things inside. We always look very curious about what he is eating and we starting asking him to organize a tortas outing :) He finally did it a couple of weeks ago and here you can see pictures of us with my colleagues eating tortas!!

Este lugar es conocido por sus "tortas futboleras". Todos los platos tienen nombres de futbolistas o cosas relacionadas con el futbol, como por ejemplo: "arbitro cabron" o "Maradona". Esta ultima es la favorita de Leonel, asi que casi todo el mundo se pidio esa torta. Yo opte por una mas ligera, con pollo, piña, queso y bacon :). La Maradona lleva de todo, jamon, carne de cerdo, queso y muchas cosas mas!

Tambien tomamos horchata y he de decir que es differente a la española, no es de chufa :) es de almendras, una especie de leche de almendras (me gusta mas la española, jiji!)

This place is known for its "tortas futboleras". All the dishes have the names of football players or things related to football, as for example: "fuck you referee" or "Maradona". The latter is Leonel's favorite, so almost everyone got that one. I chose a different one, a bit lighter with chicken breast, pineapple, cheese and bacon. The "Maradona" has many things, ham, pork, cheese and many other things.

We also had horchata, a drink similar to almond milk. We also have it in Spain, but there it is made with a fruit that only grows  in certain parts of Spain. It is called chufa (I have to admit that I prefer the Spanish, hihi!)

 La verdad es que lo pasamos genial, las tortas estaban muy ricas y fue un plan genial para una tranquila mañana de domingo, ya que los sabados trabajamos!

Volviendo a agosto, cuando aun hacia calorcito por aqui, fuimos a Chicago a otro restaurante mejicano llamado "Xoco". http://www.rickbayless.com/restaurants/xoco.html.
Going back to August, when it was super hot in Chicago, we went to another Mexican in Chicago called "Xoco": http://www.rickbayless.com/restaurants/xoco.html.

Lo vimos en un programa de la tele hace varios meses y lo catalogaron como uno de los mejores mejicanos de Chicago. La verdad es que el sitio tiene su encanto, es moderno a la vez que casero y me gusto mucho. Las tortas no eran tan grandes como las de Rocky's tacos, pero estaban muy buenas. Ademas, las preparaban en un horno de leña y eso se notaba en el sabor.
En la pagina web lo describen como un restaurante "mejicano-aleman" en Chicago :) El dueño es originalmente de Alemania, pero vivio en Mejico mas de 20 años. Su especialidad son los caldos y las tortas y de postre, churros! En España solo para desayunar, jeje!

We saw the restaurant on a TV show some months ago and it was considered the best Mexican in Chicago. The truth is that it is pretty special, modern and traditional at the same time. I really liked it. The tortas were not as big as the ones from Rocky's tacos, but they were delicious. They were made in a wood oven and you could taste it in the meat and bread.
On their website it is described as an "Mexican-German" restaurant in Chicago :) The owner is originally from Germany but he lived for more than 20 years in Mexico. The specials of the house are the tortas, soups and churros with chocolate for desert. In Spain we only eat them for breakfast.
Here I show you some pictures with our tortas. Mine had caramelized onion, pulled-pork meat and tomatillo sauce, delicious!

The All Results Journal

Hola a todos! 
Hace solo un par de semanas que empece a colaborar como voluntaria en "The All Results Journal". Esta revista esta aun en sus principios y hay mucho trabajo que hacer en varias areas, en particular yo estoy colaborando como escritora cientifica y como fundraiser, es decir, en como obtener financiacion para la revista.
Una de mis tareas para comenzar el voluntariado consistio en escribir un texto sobre la importancia de publicar resultados negativos. Trate de dar mi opinion y en especial, me centre en todos aquellos articulos que estan escritos haciendo una historia acorde con lo que en un principio se queria mostrar y no lo que realmente ha pasado.

Only a couple of weeks ago I started collaborating with the "All Results Journal". It is a very young journal, born recently and there is still a lot of work to do. I'm participating in the areas of scientific writing and fundraiser.
One of my first tasks as scientific writer was working on a text about the importance of publishing negative results and the existence of journals that publish these results. I tried to show my personal opinion and I focused on all those scientific articles that are written to make a story in agreement with what it was supposed to show and not showing the real story.

Paquito D'Rivera concert

Ayer fuimos a un concierto de jazz en el Nichols Concert Hall de Evanston. Este sitio esta justamente al lado de nuestra casa :) con lo que pudimos ir con toda tranquilidad. Este auditorio esta dentro del instituto de musica de Chicago, que esta aqui en Evanston, jeje!

Nunca habia pasado al edificio y hace poco Thomas vio en facebook que Paquito de Rivera venia a dar un concierto. Para los que no le conoceis, Paquito de Rivera es un musico cubano, ganador de nada mas y nada menos que de 9 premios Grammy :) Os dejo el link abajo para que veais la discografia y la carrera musical de este artista.

Es muy famoso dentro del mundo del jazz, la musica favorita de Thomas. A mi me gustan los conciertos, pero he de reconocer que no es mi estilo para escuchar en el dia a dia.

Yesterday we went to a Jazz concert in the Nichols Concert Hall of Evanston. This place is just next to our apartment so we could go there in just a few minutes. The concert hall is in the Music Institute of Chicago, which is also in Evanston :)

It was the first time I went to this concert hall and just some days ago Thomas saw there would be a concert of Paquito de Rivera there. I'm including a link to the official website of Paquito D'Rivera. He is a Cuban artist and the winner of 9 Grammy awards :) He is very famous in the world of Jazz music which is Thomas' favorite. I like the concerts a lot, but I have to admit that is not the kind of music I like to listen to while I'm at home.

El concierto empezo a las 7:30 de la tarde y las entradas mas caras solo costaban 25 $, con lo que era un plan de lo mejorcito!! El espectaculo termino sobre las 10 de la noche y se me paso volando!

 Los musicos que acompañaron a Paquito D'Rivera en el escenario son los profesores de musica del instituto de musica de Chicago. Empezaron tocando ellos y despues de varios temas presentaron a la gran estrella de la noche.

Paquito toco el saxofon y el clarinete, unas piezas maravillosas, un sonido alucinante, que talento!! Los musicos que le acompañaron eran muy buenos y el espectaculo merecio la pena.

Paquito trajo incluso un artista invitado que el mismo produce. Su nombre es Alex Brown, un pianista de 23 años que es alucinante, ha aprovechado bien su formacion, jeje! Ademas, deberiais haber oido como toca, que melodia, un ritmo estupendo! Abajo podeis ver algunas fotos del concierto, de la sala de conciertos y de los musicos.

The concert started at 7:30 pm and the most expensive tickets were only 25 $ so the plan was super good!! The show finished at 10 and for me it seemed only like 10 minutes.

The musicians playing with Paquito D'Rivera were the music teachers of the Music Institute of Chicago. They started playing some of their compositions and after a couple of numbers they introduced the big guest artist. Paquito played sax and clarinet, wonderful sound, he is so talented!! The musicians were all great improvising and the show was definitely worth it.

Paquito introduced a guest pianist. His name is Alex Brown and he is only 23!!! Paquito has produced his first CD, awesome! I guess he has practiced a lot considering how young he is. What a melody, rhythm and talent! You can see some pictures below: the musicians, the concert and the concert hall.

Despues del concierto hubo una recepcion y nos tomamos un vinito :) Ademas, nos compramos un par de CDs (caimos) y los artistas nos los firmaron.

Lake Fox

Hola a todos!! Hace un par de semanas decidimos hacer una pequeña excursion por los alrededores. Como sabeis, no tenemos coche, asi que alquilamos uno y solo estaba disponible por unas horas. Yendo hacia el norte de Evanston y adentrandonos en Wisconsin o Michigan, hay muchos parques naturales. Tambien hay algunos lagos, mas pequeños que los llamados grandes lagos que son sitios tranquilos, bonitos y donde se puede ir a pasar el dia tranquilamente.

La verdad es que Thomas lo preparo mientras yo estaba en la Universidad (en domingo, pero en la universidad, jeje). Cuando yo termine, me recogio y nos fuimos hacia "Lake Fox". Os dejo aqui el mapa :)

Hi!! A couple of weeks ago we decided to go and see some nature :). As you know we don't have a car, so we had to rent one and it was only available for a couple of hours. Driving to Michigan or Wisconsin there are many natural parks. We didn't have a lot of time so we decided to go see some of the small lakes close to Chicago, in particular we went to Fox Lake. You can see the place if you click the link above.

No se por que razon, hoy no puedo colocar las fotos entre el texto...ayyy!! Asi que las dejo al principio y asi tambien se pueden ver aunque no sea entre los parrafos de la historia.

Nos llevamos algo de comida sencilla, una meriendita y estuvimos alli tomando el sol, paseando y disfrutando del paisaje. La proxima vez lo pensaremos con mas tiempo y podemos alquilar unas motos acuaticas :)

Y eso fue todo, algo sencillo, cerca, pero al menos pudimos visitar algun sitio nuevo!

I don't know why but I can't organize the pictures among the text...ay! So I left them at the beginning so you can see them and then read the story.

We took some food, kind of picnic and then we relaxed under the sun, walking around and resting. Next time we'll think it with some more time and we'll rent a water motorbike!

That's all for the moment. It was a short trip, but it was nice, easy and relaxing!

Hola a todos! Tenia este post pendiente desde agosto y no se como lo he ido dejando demasiado, contando otras cosas, estando ocupada con el laboratorio, no me decidia a poner las fotos, en fin...

En verano fuimos a la bolera con mi grupo, todos los veranos se organiza una actividad de grupo, bien una barbacoa en el lago, en la casa del jefe o en la bolera, como en este caso.

Fue un viernes, tuvimos reunion de grupo y despues de las presentaciones, nos fuimos a la bolera en el centro de Chicago. Esta justo al lado de este edificio tan chulo (mirad la foto, los primeros pisos son el aparacamiento y luego los apartamentos).

Hi everybody! I had this post pending since August and I don't know how it happened that I almost forgot about it, writing other posts, being busy in the lab and so on.

My group organized a bowling night out in the summer as a group activity. Every summer there is one of this activities, bbq in the lake, bowling, etc.

This one was on Friday after group meeting. We went to the bowling alley after the presentation of my colleagues. It is in Chicago downtown, next to this awesome building, one of my favorites.

Encargamos unas pizzas, el jefe invito a unas bebidas y lanzamos la bola contra los bolos intentando tirarlos toditos!!! :) He de decir que empece bastante bien haciendo un strike, pero despues de eso, creo que derribe 10 bolos como maximo...las muñecas se me tuercen, jeje!!

Os enseño una foto de grupo, compuesto por John (postdoc), Adam P. (first year), Vibha y Derek (undergrands), Thomas y yo. La luz era bastante rara, asi que las fotos no son muy buenas.

We ordered some pizzas, drinks and then we played. I had a very good start point with a strike, but after that I didn't throw more than ten bowls...my wrists twist a little bit to the wrong side apparently, hehe!
