My new office and lab. Mi oficina y laboratorio nuevos

Desde que nos mudamos a Estrasburgo el pasado marzo paso casi todo mi tiempo en este lugar :) el laboratorio y mi oficina, que comparto con mis compis Eko y Henning, de Indonesia y Alemania, respectivamente.

El laboratorio es tranquilo, de momento estoy sola trabajando alli, pero esta comunicado con otros laboratorios y veo gente constantemente. Creo que aun lo tengo bastante organizado, aunque despues de algun dia de muchos experimentos, puede parecer un desastre, jeje!

Since we moved to Strasbourg last March I have spent almost all my time in these two places, the lab and my office, which I share with my two colleagues, Eko and Henning, from Indonesia and Germany respectively.

The lab is pretty quiet, so far I'm working alone there but it is communicated with other labs and I see people going in and out all the time. I think I still have it very organized but after a day of lots of experiments it can look ultra messy, hehe!

ISIS

Hola!! Este edificio es donde trabajamos ahora :) Empezamos el 1 de marzo y se llama Institut de Science et d'Ingénierie Supramoléculaires (ISIS) de Estrasburgo (Francia). Fundado por Jean Marie Lehn (http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean-Marie_Lehn), premio Nobel de quimica en 1987 por su investigacion pionera en quimica supramolecular, la parte de la quimica que me apasiona y a la que me dedico!! Es un gran honor andar por aqui y cruzarte con un premio Nobel, lo cierto es que eso no pasa todos los dias!!

Es un centro de excelencia donde 12 grupos de investigacion se concentran para realizar una labor cientifica de primera linea.

Llevamos poco tiempo aqui, Thomas tiene su propio laboratio (http://thomashermans.com/wp/) y yo trabajo como postdoc en el grupo de Luisa de Cola (http://www-isis.u-strasbg.fr/cbs/start).

En estos tiempos dificiles que corren en todo el mundo, al menos tenemos la oportunidad de trabajar en nuestra dificil profesion, para la que hace falta esfuerzo, paciencia, muchisimas horas de trabajo y poquisimas vacaciones. Aunque a veces parece una locura, el mundo de la ciencia es tan apasionante que la recompensa siempre es gigante :) Pronto mas fotos!!

Hi!! This is the building where we work now :) We started the 1st of March and it is called Institut de Science et d'Ingénierie Supramoléculaires (ISIS) of Strasbourg (France). It was funded by the 1987 chemistry Nobel laureate Jean Marie Lehn (http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean-Marie_Lehn). He got this award thanks to his pioneering work in supramolecular chemistry, the part of chemistry that I love the most!! It is a great honor working here and seeing pretty often a Nobel laureate walking around. It doesn't happen everyday!!

It is an excellence research center where 13 research groups are concentrated to work in high level investigation topics.

We've been here a very short time. Thomas is the director of his own group (http://thomashermans.com/wp/) and I work as a postdoc in the group of Prof. Luisa De Cola (http://www-isis.u-strasbg.fr/cbs/start).

We are very lucky because we can work in something we really love in these difficult time, especially regarding economy. Research requieres too many hours of work, effort, patient and almost no holidays, but it is so amazing that the reward is huge :) More pics coming soon!!

Primer contacto con Estrasburgo. First contact with Strasbourg

Estrasburgo, nuestro nuevo destino. Queda menos de un mes para empezar a trabajar alli y aunque un poco triste por ir a otro pais, tambien con ganas de empezar nuevos proyectos y de continuar con el fascinante y dificil mundo de la investigacion.

Durante el mes de enero pasamos una semana en Estrasburgo buscando piso, arreglando papeles y familiarizandonos con la ciudad.

Aqui dejo algunas fotos de buenos momentos en la ciudad. Mucho mas esta por venir. Ya tenemos piso, asi que aceptamos visitas!!!

Strasbourg is our new destination :) Less than a month to start working there and even though I feel sad to go to another country (different than Spain), I'm also excited to start new projects and continue working on the difficult and great world of research.

We spent a week in Strasbourg last month. We looked for an apartment and arranged several things for our new life there.

Margaritas night

Siempre es bueno organizar alguna salida con los amigos o companeros al salir del trabajo. En este caso, salimos a tomar unas margaritas a un restaurante mejicano que se llama "El templo maya". Thomas y yo habiamos estado alli antes celebrando el cumpleanos de un compi de Thomas y como lo pasamos genial, pense que seria una buena oportunidad para hacer una escapadita con mis companeros :). Los martes y jueves tienen un especial de margaritas y si ademas, las pedis en español, puede que te sirvan doble chorrito de tequila. Viva Mejico!! El servicio es estupendo y se pasa genial!
Going out with friends or colleagues after work is always a great plan. This time we went out for a margaritas night to "The Mayan temple". Thomas and I had been there before for a birthday party celebration and I thought it would be nice to go with my colleagues this time :). They have margarita specials on Tuesday and Thursday and if you order them in Spanish you can probably get an extra shot of tequila per margarita, imagine if you drink 3 or 4 drinks with double tequila. Viva Mexico!! If you are around Chicago go there, service is great!

Group meeting

Hola a todos! Aprovechando el tiempo libre que tengo mientras espero que llegue mi visado (todo esto aparecera en proximos textos) os cuento una de las cosas mas importantes que he hecho referente al trabajo. Vamos, considerando que he venido a Chicago para trabajar, pues si, esto es probablemente lo mas importante que he hecho aqui :) y es "Group meeting".

Hi!! Since I have some spare time while I wait for my visa (I'll tell you about it in next posts) I'll talk about one of the most important things I've done here. Considering I came here to work I can say that this is the most important thing I've done until the moment and it is "group meeting".

En los grupos de investigacion se suele presentar el trabajo que uno hace regularmente. Hay todo tipo de reuniones, algunas informales para presentar los ultimos resultados o hablar sobre problemas que surgen en la investigacion, discusiones sobre nuevos proyectos, etc y otras que son mucho mas formales y donde se presenta tu trabajo de varios meses de una forma muy seria y detallada.

Presenting your work, results, data, etc is very normal in research groups. There are all kind of meetings, some informal where you talk about research problems or your last results and some others a lot more formal where you present your work of the last months in a very detailed way.

En Holanda yo participaba en al menos 4 tipos distintos de meetings y tambien en el llamado "colloquium", que era la reunion mas seria de todas.

Aqui en Northwestern, en el grupo del profesor Stupp me ha tocado dar mi presentacion mas super, mega formal recientemente, en concreto el 11 de junio.

While I still in Holland I used to attend at least four different kinds of meetings and also the so-called "colloquium" of MST. Here we have to do something similar and the past 11th of June it was my turn :)

Queria escribir sobre ello para que sepais las cosas que hago por aqui, jeje! Despues de este dia me fui de vacaciones dos semanitas y junto con el descanso, mas la motivacion producida por lo bien que se dio la reunion, he vuelto cargadita de energia para seguir trabajando en este laboratorio :)

I wanted to write about it for you to know about the things I do here. After this day we went two weeks on holiday. After resting at home and the motivation I got after the meeting (it went well) I'm back in town full of energy to continue working :)

Inspirational Stupp. Charla de mi jefe en espanol, motivante

Hola a todos! Hoy hemos tenido reunion de grupo. Aqui en Chicago son mas o menos una vez a la semana, hay dos personas que presentan y muestran su trabajo de los ultimos meses en una presentacion bastante formal, con preguntas, etc. Cada presentacion lleva mas o menos 1,5 horas.
Hoy despues de la presentacion de uno de mis companeros, mi jefe queria hablar sobre cosas importantes para el grupo, requisitos para obtener el doctorado, etc. Otro dia me gustaria hablar sobre esto, aunque parezca duro, al menos la gente que acaba aqui el doctorado tiene una estupenda base cientifica y un curriculum que sirve para encontrar un buen trabajo despues y sinceramente, me gustaria decir todo lo que siento sobre este asunto y lo decepcionada que puedo llegar a estar con mi doctorado en mi grupo...no voy a decir en Espana porque no quiero generalizar, pero este tema me dara seguramente para otro texto.
Despues de hablar de estos asuntos, el Prof. Stupp nos ha ensenado un video de una charla que dio en Costa Rica, su pais de origen y que iba dirigida a un publico general, no cientifico. Aqui os dejo el link, la charla esta en espanol y asi, todos mis amigos y familia que no estan en el mundo de la ciencia, podreis ver y entender algunas de las cosas preciosas que se hacen en este grupo. Desafortunadamente, yo no trabajo en este area :) por lo que no creo que sea yo la que descubra el remedio contra el parkinson o el alzheimer. Otro dia, os explicare un poco en que consisten mis proyectos :) Espero que os de tiempo a ver la charla, merece la pena. Yo ya conocia este trabajo, porque en el mundo cientifico la reputacion de este grupo es muy buena y por cierto, bien merecida, pero ahora vosotros tambien podreis conocer este trabajo :)

Hi everyone! Today we had the weekly big group meeting, this time in Chicago campus. Normally there are two speakers who present the work they've been doing in the last months in a very formal presentation. Including questions, each contribution can take around 1.5 hours.
Today after the presentation of one of my colleagues, my boss wanted to talk about some important issues for the group, such as the requirements to get your PhD, etc. I would like to talk also about this issue. Even though it seems to be hard to get your PhD here, once you finish, everyone has a great scientific background and a nice CV to help you find a good job and to be honest, I'd like to talk about how disappointed I can be when I think about my PhD in my group, I'm not going to say in Spain because generalizing wouldn't be fair.
After finishing with this, Prof. Stupp has shown us a video about a talk he gave recently in Costa Rica, his country of origin. It is directed to a non scientific public, so it is very easy to understand and see the nice work that is being done in the group. It is in Spanish, hehe! but probably you can follow it and also, for the ones in science, you'll probably know everything about it. I hope my friends and family that are far from the scientific world can understand more in detail what can be done about illnesses such as alzheimer or parkinson. Unfortunately, this is not the field where I'm currently working, so I don't think I'll be the person who discovers the final clues to solve these illnesses.
Anyway, I hope you find some time to watch the talk, it is worth it.
