La cantina de mi edificio. The lovely cantine

En este nuevo texto me gustaria ilustraros sobre las distintas opciones de comida que se pueden encontrar en la cantina del edificio donde trabajo. El abanico de posibilidades es muy interesante, especialmente la parte de "comida caliente".

In this new post I'd like to illustrate you about the food options you can find in the cantine of the building where I work. It offers an interesting group of possibilities, especially the part dedicated to "warm food".
La cantina tiene varias partes, en un lateral se puede encontrar toda clase de bebidas, desde agua normal o con gas, a zumos, bebidas carbonatadas y sobre todo leche, que tambien la hay de varias clases, entera, semi y "karne melk", es leche que esta como cortada, agria y que tambien puede ser entera o semi...a mi personalemente no me gusta, pero es muy popular aqui.
It has several parts, in one side you can find all kind of drinks: still or sparkling water, juices, non-alcoholic drinks and the most important drink, milk in different versions too, semi-skimmed, skimmed and "karne melk", it is like sour milk, kind of buttermilk. I don't really like it but it is very popular here.

La siguiente parte esta dedicada a toda clase de embutido, pates, ensaladas (pollo con curry, de cangrejo, de huevo, algun dia hablare de ellas, no penseis que es como una ensalada espanola), quesos (curado, tierno, joven, con cominos, light), etc que se pueden poner dentro del pan para hacerte un sandwich o un bocadillo. En esta parte se pueden encontrar tambien huevos duros y tomates. A continuacion, hay un estante solo dedicado al pan. Normalmente hay al menos 10 clases de pan distintas, pan blanco, integral, de molde, con frutos secos, barritas, baguettes, con soja, blando, duro, los tipicos "krenteballen" (panecillos dulces con pasas por dentro) que ellos suelen acompanar de algo salado dentro, con muesli...esta parte no esta nada mal.
The next part is dedicated to all kind of things you can put inside your bread: sausage, pates, salads (chicken curry salad, crab, egg, I'll talk about them one day, they are not like Spanish salads), cheese (old, young, with spices, light) etc. Here you can also find hard-boiled eggs and tomatoes. Next there is a stand only dedicated to bread. There are at least 10 different kind of breads, white, with cereals, loaves, baguettes, with soy, hard, soft, with nuts, with fruits, the typical "krentenballen" (bread with raisins inside) Dutch people use to eat them with something salty inside, with muesli...this part is pretty ok.

En frente de esta parte se puede encontrar la zona de ensaladas y sopas. Hay varias clases de lechuga, alguna ensalada de pasta, tomate en trozos, pepino, mezcla de verduras, etc. Lo pones en un vaso de plastico y listo. Inconveniente de estas ensaladas? Para mi personalmente, el alino. Hay de dos clases, una opcion es una especie de alino de yogur y la otra es un tanto avinagrada. La verdad es que estoy acostumbrada al aceite de oliva, un poquito en la ensalada, por lo que no he logrado encontrar el alino que me guste aqui en Holanda, lo siento! solo aceite de oliva, ya sabeis "oro liquido" buenisimo para la salud!!
Junto a las ensaladas se encuentran las sopas. Esto fue lo mas duro al llegar aqui, jaja! Hay dos tipos de sopa cada dia: la sopa basica (40 centimos por vaso) y la sopa de lujo (1 euro y algo). Las dos son sopas de bolsa, como las que mostre el otro dia y los sabores pueden siempre sorprender. Los sabores de hoy eran "sopa cremosa de pollo" para la sopa basica y "sopa de pimiento" para la sopa de lujo. Los vasos son de carton y las cucharillas de plastico, de muy mala calidad, si metes la cuchara durante mucho tiempo en la sopa caliente, la cuchara se deforma...a lo mejor ayuda a que la sopa sea mas cremosa :)
In front of this part we can find the area destined to salads and soups. Here you can choose among different kinds of green salad, tomatoes, eggs, some pasta salad, cucumber, etc. You mix everything in a plastic cup and ready to go! What is the nasty thing of these salads? For me personally is the dressing. There are two options, a kind of yogouth dressing and another one with a lot of vinegar. To be honest, I normally only use extra virgin olive oil for my salads and I still didn't manage to find a nice dressing here in Holland, so I keep on using olive oil, you know "liquid gold", the best for your health! :)
Next to the salads we can fin the soups. There are also two different offers: the basic soup (40 cents) and the luxury soup (1 euro something). They are both precooked soups from the bag like the ones I showed you the other day and the ingredients can be surprising. The day I took the pictures there was "creamy chicken soup" for the basic soup and "bell peppers soup" for the luxe soup. You can serve your soup in a paper cup and eat it with a plastic spoon which can be deformed with once it is some time inside the hot soup, maybe this helps to make the soup more creamy...:)

Salads. Ensaladas

Sopas. En esta ocasion: sopa cremosa de pollo y sopa de pimiento. Soups, this time: creamy chicken soup and bell peppers soup.

Al lado de las sopas hay una nueva seccion dedicada a bocadillos ya preparados, hay de varias clases, pero te arriesgas a que el pan no sea del dia, ya sabeis: mama, cuando vamos a comer pan de hoy? a lo que la madre contesta: manana! :))
Next to the soup there is a new section dedicated to sandwiches, there are different options, but sometimes you take the risk of eating a kind of "hard as a rock bread". I made a joke for the Spanish version, but if I translate it I'm afraid you don't get it :)

Se pueden encontrar tambien un par de maquinas de cafe, que sinceramente NO recomiendo y por fin nos aproximamos a la parte que mas me gusta!!! la zona reservada a las suculentas comidas calientes, uhhmmm, tan apetitosas!!! estos ricos manjares junto con la presencia de las damas de la cantina hacen que tu comida sea mucho mejor, si cabe...
You can also find a couple of coffie machines that I strongly DON'T recommend and finally we approach my favourite part!!! the zone reserved for the succulent warm food, uhhmmm, so tempting!! these delicacies together with the presence of the cantine workers can make you meal even better, if possible...
Y que podemos encontrar aqui?? Pues una amplia variedad de delicatesen holandesas como frikandel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frikandel), que son salchichas hechas con carne de todas las clases juntas: cerdo, vaca, pollo y caballo en gran cantidad. Solo he probado un pequeno trocito y la verdad es que el sabor no me convencio...Tambien hay kroket (http://www.dutchgrub.com/2009/10/10/the-kroket-hollands-glory), que son croquetas algo mas grandes que las espanolas, pero con un relleno mas peculiar. No puedo evitar compararlas con las croquetas de cocido caseras de mi madre...nada que ver!! La gente las espachurra y se las come en un bocadillo, como en la foto.
And what can we find here?? A wide variety of Dutch deligths as for example: frikandel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frikandel), they are sausages made of meat of all kinds together: pork, beef, chicken and horse. I've only tried it once and I really didn't like it...There are also kroket (http://www.dutchgrub.com/2009/10/10/the-kroket-hollands-glory) they are similar to Spanish croquettes but a bit bigger and the filling is more "peculiar" to me. I can't avoid comparing them to my mother's homemade croquettes, nothing to do!! People mash them and they eat it inside their bread as in the picture.

Junto con las frikandel y las kroket se pueden encontrar otro tipo de "snacks" como albondigas (se ven en la foto), algun kebab, trozos de pizza y demas cositas fritas que al mirarlas da pena y si, para mi es una pena que se ofrezca este tipo de comida en la Universidad, pero es lo que hay! Normalmente la grasa gotea y se absorbe en el papel que hay debajo, pero no parece nada saludable. Together with the frikandel and kroket there are other kind of snacks: meatballs, kebab, pizza and other fried stuff. They don't look nice at all and sometimes I'm surprised why this food can be offered at University, but it is like this! Normally fat drops from these snacks and it is absorbed in the paper under the snacks, but they really don't look healthy. Frikandel, kroket and a kind of hamburger

Normalmente yo traigo mi propia comida en un tupper. Al principio hacia el tipo de comida espanola, pero a las 12 de la manana y ahora me suelo traer una ensalada hecha en casa. Si alguna vez compro algo aqui suele ser una sopa jaja! pan o algo asi, pero nunca nada de "comida caliente". De todas formas, estoy reservando mucha informacion para un proximo post sobre comida holandesa en general, restaurantes y como es por ejemplo, una tipica comida holandesa desde mi punto de vista y contada por mi :) Todo esto y mucho mas, en proximos episodios!!
Normally I bring my own food in a box. At the beginning I used to make the traditional Spanish lunch, but at 12 instead of at 14 or so. Now I also bring my own prepared salad and I reserve the big dinner for in the evening. If I buy something here it is normally a soup as I told you already or some bread, but almost never "warm food". Anyway, I'm keeping a lot of extra info for next posts about Dutch food in general, restaurants and typical Dutch meals, everything from my personal point of view and told in my own way :). Everything in next episodes!!

En ocasiones...como sopa, no se lo digaís a mi madre. I...eat soup, don´t tell my mother

Todos los que me conoceís, sabeís que no soy una gran admiradora de la sopa ni de las comidas de cuchara en general (solo el postre, jaja!), pero tengo que admitir que después de pelearme con mi madre, gruñir y quejarme cada vez que en mi casa había cocido, sopa, lentejas, etc...ahora, aquí en Holanda e incluso a veces, precocinada...sí, me cuesta admitirlo ¡como sopa!

It is well known for everyone who knows me that I'm not the biggest fan of soups or meals you can eat with a spoon (only dessert, haha!) but I have to admit that after complaining to my mother and even fighting every time there was "cocido" (http://www.spain-recipes.com/cocido-recipe.htlm), soup, etc...now, here in Holland and sometimes precooked...yes, it's hard to admit, but I eat soup!Cocido

Hasta el momento, me he limitado a comer gazpacho fresquito en verano y a regañadientes cocido una vez a la semana y sopa otro día, agggg...pero ahora, no todos los días, pero varios sí que me apetece comer sopa y en especial, sopa de tomate, aquí veis mi favorita: Pittige tomatensoup de Unox ¡si me viese mi madre, lo fliparía la pobre!

Until the moment I just ate fresh gazpacho (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/gazpacho), nice and cool in the summer and nagging a bit I had to eat cocido one a week and soup another day, aggg...but now, not everyday, but quite often I feel like eating soup and particularly tomate soup, here you can see my favourite: Pittige tomatensoup de Unox, if my mother could see it, she would freak out!

Gazpacho andaluz. Cold Spanish soup with tomato, cucumber, garlic, bread, hard boiled egg, carrot, bell pepper, olive oil and water.

Sopa de tomate picante de Unox, con pimiento y cayenas. Spicy tomate soup by Unox with bell peppers and cayenne peppers. Mi favorita!

En casa también preparamos de vez en cuando, de calabaza, espárragos, verduras, de todo, pero siempre compro sopas de Unox en Albert Hein, el súpermercado más famoso de Holanda (esto parece un anuncio de sopas, jaja!). Aquí podeís ver la variedad de sopas. La verdad es que hay sopas de ingredientes que ni me imaginaba antes de venir aquí como sopa de mostaza, de pimienta, queso, curri, coliflor, brocoli (todas no las he probado).

We also prepare homemade soup from time to time, pumpking, asparagus, vegetables, everything, but I always buy Unox soups from Albert Hein the most famous supermarkets in Holland (this looks like a comercial, haha!). Here you can see the soup variety. To be honest here I found ingredients to make soup that were difficult for me to imagine one could make soup out of them like mustard, pepper, cheese, curry, cauliflower, broccoli ( I didn't try all of them yet).

La única sopa que no me gusta nada en absoluto (la he probado) es la típica sopa holandesa "ertwtensoep" o sopa de guisantes. Se hace con guisantes secos partidos por la mitad, se ponen en remojo una noche y se hierven junto con patatas, zanahorias, salchichas ahumadas holandesas (rookworst), panceta, apio, puerros y no sé si se me olvida algo más. Se deja toda la mezcla hirviendo a fuego lento hasta que la cuchara con la que se remueve se queda clavada y no se cae ¡jaja! Thomas la preparó para mis padres en una típica "cena holandesa" que les ofreció en mi casa. Mi padre lo bautizó como "engrudo holandés" pero lo cierto es que es muuuuy nutritiva (con todo lo que lleva...), sana y que a la gente le encanta. The only soup I don't like at all (I tried it) is the typical Ducth soup "ertwten soep" or split peas soup. It is prepared with dry split peas, they have to be in water overnight and then you boil them with potatoes, carrots, smoked Dutch sausages (rookworst), bacon, celery and something else I don't remember. You leave the mixture boiling until you are not able of stirring it with a spoon and it stays straight up in the soup. Thomas prepared it for my parents in a "typical Dutch dinner" he offered in my house. My father gave it another baptism name "Dutch paste", but it really is energetic (with all the ingredients it has...), healthy and people love it. More info in next posts about Dutch food.

Ertwten soup

Hoy he sido muy valiente y de la nada han surgido las ansias de comer sopa otra vez, sí, en este caso ha sido sopa de cebolla, esto de verdad si lo ve mi madre no me habla en un año...la próxima vez no me quejaré, me comeré la sopa e incluso probaré la sopa de ajos de mi madre y lo que haga falta...aquí me veis, feliz como una perdiz, comiendo sopa de cebolla, no solo la he comido para comer, también para cenar!!!Today I've been very brave and I don't know from where, the anxiety for eating soup grew up inside of me again, this time onion soup, if my mother would have seen it, she wouldn't speak to me in a year...next tiem I won't complain about her soup and I'll even try her garlic soup (sopas de ajo)...here you can see me, so happy eating my onion soup, not only for lunch but also for dinner!!!!

The Smarteez

Queridos amigos, hoy me gustaría hablaros de una cosa que me resultó muy "friky" al principio de estar aquí y que es, una de las bandas donde toca Thomas. Ellos son "The Smarteez", vaya algo así como "Los lacasitos."

Dear friends, today I'd like to tell you about something I found pretty "freaky" at the beginning. It is one of the bands where Thomas plays. They are "The Smarteez", the Dutch version of Smarties.

En el sur de Holanda, el carnaval es una de las fiestas más celebradas y las bandas de música carnavalera abundand por aquí. Los Smarteez son una de estas bandas y he de decir que ¡¡son los mejores!! Podeís visitar su página web aquí: www.smarteez.nl
In the South of Holland, carnaval is one of the most celebrated parties and there are tones of carnaval music bands. The Smarteez is one of these bands and I have to say that they are the best!! You can visit their website here: www.smarteez.nl

He de decir, que la música carnavalera de aquí es bastante pesadita y más cuando viene de algunas de estas bandas que lo que hacen es poner los instrumentos juntos sin hacer música. Bien, ellos no son así, tocan bastante bien, tienen estilo y algo más de gusto y además de tocar música típica de carnaval, también tocan algunos temas populares.

I have to admit that carnaval music is quite heavy and more if it comes from certain bands where they just put the instruments together and try to make them sound, but not music. Well, they are not like that, they have style, taste and apart from playing typical carnaval music, they also play some other popular/pop songs.

Los Smarteez se caracterizan por lo únicos y exclusivos que son sus trajes. Dichos trajes están hechos a mano, con piedras, brillantes, plumas, cueros, etc y lo que se quiere representar, son los colores de los lacasitos. También he de decir, que los trajes son de lo más recargado, pero al mismo tiempo hay que reconocer el trabajo que llevan, lo que al mismo tiempo hace que su precio sea un poco excesivo, llegando a superar los 1500 euros, uooohh!!! Poco a poco os iré enseñando los trajes de cada uno de los miembros de los Smarteez, de momento podeis ver el nuevo traje de Thomas (antes tenia uno prestado) y el traje que me prestan cada ano por carnaval.
The Smarteez are famous because of their only and exclusive home-made suits. They have all kind of colours, feathers, stones, beads, leather, etc trying to resemble the colours of the Smarties. I have to say that theses suits result baroque, but at the same time I have to recognize the huge amount of hours it takes to make them, what also makes the prices so expensive (more than 1500 euros, uohh!!). From now on, I'll try to show you the suits of every Smarteez member. For the moment, you can observe here our Suits: Thomas' new suit (before he had a suit from someone else) and the suit The Smarteez lend me every year for carnaval.

Thomas y yo misma con nuestros trajecitos. A todos los espanoles se que os resulta grotesco todo esto, ya me habeis acusado de Lady Gaga y Georgie Dann entre otras cosas... Thomas and I with our carnaval suits. For Spanish people this is really weird for our carnaval tradition, some people called me Lady Gaga or Georgie Dann (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georgie_Dann).

Yo les conocí en el 2007, al poco tiempo de empezar mi relación con Thomas. La banda prepara cada dos años un viaje de descanso y de diversión para el grupo, se organizan actividades, se lleva comida, juegos, se escucha música y sobre todo, se ríe mucho y se bebe :) ¿y qué se bebe? pues de todo, desde cerveza hasta la bebida más adorada por la banda: Jägermeister, licor de arce. En la siguiente foto podeís ver mi cara la primera vez que lo probé...

I met them in 2007, just when I starte my relationship with Thomas. The band organizes a group trip every two years thinking of relaxing, rest and have a lot of fun. They take food, games, they listen to music, sing and of course, they laugh and drink :) and...what do you drink? you can drink everything, from beer to the most precious drink: Jägermeister, maple liquor. You can see my face the first time I tried it...

Tambien podeis ver algunas de las "actividades" que se hacen durante el fin de semana de los Smarteez, algunos juegos fisicos, karaoke, cabaret, etc.
Here you can also see some of the "activities" you can do during the Smarteez weekend, some physical games, karaoke, cabaret, etc.

Como buena banda que se precie, los conciertos son una maxima que cumplir y ellos lo cumplen de sobra. Los Smarteez son una de las bandas mas dinamicas de Eindhoven y tienen una media de 3 conciertos al mes. Este numero puede aumentar si el carnaval esta cerca. Desde noviembre (dia 11 exactamente) hasta que empieza el carnaval, todas las semanas hay conciertos y actividades carnavaleras donde muchas bandas participan y por supuesto los Smarteez. Os muestro algunas fotos de los Smarteez tocando en varios lugares, en la calle y en escenarios.

If you have a nice band, concerts are the most important thing to do and in this sense, the Smarteez are the best. They are one of the most dynamic bands in Eindhoven and they can have three concerts (average) per month. This number can be higher if carnaval is close. From November (11th) to the beginning of carnaval, they have concerts every week and other kind of carnaval activities where other bands are involved. Here you can see some pictures of the band playing at different locations, in the street or on the stage.

Todos los anos, la banda celebra el principio de temporada, por supuesto organizando una fiesta llamada "De Startschot" que es algo asi como "el tiro de salida," como en las carreras de atletismo. Cada temporada la fiesta es sobre un tema diferente: festival de Eurovision, el Tirol o la ultima que fue sobre musica soul (no pudimos asistir por coincidir con la defensa de mi tesis). Para esta fiesta la banda lleva trajes especiales, prepara canciones acorde con el tema de la fiesta y trata de atraer el mayor numero de asistentes a la fiesta, que se celebra en Stadspalvijoen.
Every year teh band celebrates the starting of the season organizing a party called "The Startschot" or "the starting shot". Every year the party has a different theme: Eurovision singing contest, The Tirol or the last one about soul music (we couldn't make it this time because it was the same day of my thesis defense). For this party, the band members wear special suits, they play songs about the party's theme and of course, they try to have the biggest number of people at the party, which is celebrated in Stadspalvijoen.

Durante los dias de carnaval la banda tiene un programa muy completo que os contare en los siguientes textos, pero para ir abriendo boca os muestro una foto del autobus/bar donde la banda se desplaza a todas partes. De esta manera, no hace falta que la fiesta pare, jaja!
During carnaval the band's programme is really busy and I'll talk about it in the next posts, but to start with, you can see here a picture of the bus/bar where the band can go from one place to the other. This way, the party doesn't have to stop, haha!

Recientemente, la banda ha grabado su primer CD "Kei Lekker" que significa "Que rico" en Brabants, el dialecto de esta region. Lo grabaron en un estudio cerca de Eindhoven, un sabado de noviembre en el que yo tambien me uni. Al final incluso pude participar cantando algunas canciones. Es un CD en directo por lo que tambien se grabaron las canciones cantadas como si estuviesemos en un bar.
Durante el carnaval, tambien se celebro una fiesta por el nacimiento del CD.
Recently, the band has recorded their first CD "Kei Lekker", what means something like "So nice" in Brabants, the dialect of this region. They recorded it in a studio close to Eindhoven in November. I also joined that day and I could even participate singing some of the songs. The CD is intended to be a "live music CD" as if they were playing in a bar, so after recording the music, we could sing the songs and make some noise for the background.
During carnaval there was also a party to celebrate the birth of the new CD.

Durante todo este tiempo, ellos han sido parte de mi vida aqui en Eindhoven. He ido con ellos a muchos conciertos, a otras ciudades, incluso a la mayor fiesta gay de Alemania en Dusseldorf, he ido a sus fines de semana y ha sido muy agradable compartir con ellos este tiempo.
Al principio pense que seria una banda formada por gente de nuestra edad, luego vi que eran algo mayores (no todos), pero eso no se ningun impedimento para pasarlo bien y muchas veces, me encantaria tener la energia que ellos tienen y las ganas que le ponen para que la banda mejore. Por eso queria dedicarles uno de los textos y por supuesto, hablare de ellos en muchas mas ocasiones.
Como gran recuerdo me queda la tarta que me compraron para mi 26 cumpleanos que fue duarnte el carnaval 2008. Fue un dia maravilloso y encima tuve una gran sorpresa!!
Duribng all this time they have been part of my life here in Eindhoven. I've gone with them to hundreds of concerts, to other cities, to spend the weekend party with them and even to the biggest gay party in Germany (in Dusseldorf). It was always nice spending some time with them, treating me as one more member of the band.
At the beginning I thought the members of the band were more or less my age, but then I could see that they were a bit older than I, but that is not a problem at all to have a nice tiem and sometimes I wish I had their energy and their interest to make the band better. That's why I wanted to dedicate this post to the band and of course, I'll keep on talking about them in next posts.
As a great memory I have the birthday cake they gave me for my 26th birthday, during carnaval 2008. It was a great day and I had a great surprise!!

¡Hola a todos!
Hoy me gustaría hablaros de una parte muy importante del lugar donde trabajo: la cocina y la mesa del café.

Además de contar con maravillosos laboratorios, todo el equipamiento que puedas desear, oficinas, etc, el grupo de investigación donde trabajo tiene una cocina súper guay!! Aquí podemos encontrar un poco de todo, desde el frigorífico y congelador donde guardar tu comida, el microondas para calentarla, el lavavajillas para no tener que mover ni un dedo y también, vasos, platos, cucharas, cuchillos, etc.

Todo esto está muy, pero que muy bien, pero pensando en nuestra eficiencia, el grupo además cuenta con distintas modalidades para preparar café. Hay ciertas horas establecidas para ir y tomar café en la mesa (10:30 am and 16:30 pm), pero uno puede ir a cualquier hora del día y encontrar siempre (salvo en raras excepciones) café preparado. Para ello, el grupo tiene a Henk, él se encarga todos los días de preparar el café, preparar las tartas de cumpleaños, poner los platos, encender el lavavajillas, en fin...algo sorprendente cuando llegas aquí, al menos para mí!

Hi there! Today I´d like to tell you about a very important place in my job: the kitchen and the coffee table.

Our group counts with wonderful labs, nice equipmente, office, etc, but also, the kitchen here is great! You can find a little bit of everything here, from the frigde and freezer where you can keep your food to the microwave to warm it up, the dishwasher so you don´t have to move at all and the cutlery.

This is all awesome, but thinking of our efficiency as scientist :), the group also offers different ways to have your coffee ready at any time of the day. There are certain times where the you can drink coffee (10:30 am and 16:30 am), but one can go at any time and always finde coffee ready. Henk is the responsible of having the coffee ready, buy birthday cakes, start the dishwasher and so on, something that is surprising when you arrive here, at least for me!Aquí podeis ver la cocina. Ahora vayamos al café y a todas sus modalidades. Por una parte, se pueden encontrar tres cafeteras eléctricas, Henk siempre las tiene llenas y las deja preparadas con café en el filtro y agua en el depósito. El primer día que llegué yo quería ponerme una pequeña cantidad, al estilo del café español, pero David dijo: "no, no, échate la taza llena". Así que aquí cada vez que tomo café es una taza grande llenita!! Se puede hacer puesto que el café no es nada fuerte, aunque ellos consideran que el café de Henk es muy fuerte, pero no....

Let´s talk now about the coffee and all the possible options. You can find three electrical coffee machines. Henk has them always full and he leaves coffee in the filters and water in the reservoir to fill in more jars once the first ones are finished. The first day I arrived I wanted to fill in my mug just like in Spain, a small coffe, but David said: "no, no, fill in to the top". Here you can do that since the coffee is not strong at all, they consider it is, but it is not....

Por supuesto, hay más posibilidades, como la cafetera Senseo de Philips, típica holandesa. En España se intentó comercializar por un tiempo...sin ningún éxito. La verdad es que es un café que no me gusta mucho, la verad, pero aquí hay una al menos en cada casa. El café viene en cajas, ya metido en filtros que se insertan dentro de la cafetera, se pone agua caliente y listo!

Of course, there are more possibilities as for example, the Senseo coffee machine by Philips, typical Dutch. It was available in Spain for some time, but it was quite unseccessful. I don´t really like that coffee, but here there is at least one in every house. You can buy boxes with the coffee already in the filters, you put them in the machine together with hot water and ready!

Más recientemente, una nueva máquina de café con posibilidad de preparar expreso y capuccino está disponible en el grupo. Tiene opciones para elegir como quieres el café de fuerte, el tamaño del café, etc. Se pueden poner los granos de café sin moler o ya molido, se pone el agua caliente y a seleccionar el café deseado :)

More recently, a new coffee machine is available in the group. With this one you can prepare expreso, capuccino, etc. You can choose how strong you want your coffee, the size of the coffee, etc.

Y ahora, finalmente, hemos llegado a la parte más especial de este post. Es normal que cuando bebes café, le pongas azúcar, sacarina, leche o lo que tú quieras y claro, hay que darle vuelta a la bebida para obtener un sabor homogéneo. La idea más lógica sería coger una cucharilla y darle vuelta a tu café, pero claro, ¿qué pasaría si en un grupo de más de 100 personas todo el mundo cogiese una cucharilla? Oh, no!! catástrofe!! habría una gran pérdida de cucharillas de café...dejando al mundo abandonado y con carencia de cucharillas, jaja! La solución más fácil: la cucharilla de Henk. ¿Qué es esto? Algo muy fácil, Henk coge un vasito, pone una cucharilla dentro, la ata a la mesa para que no se pierda y tú te pones el café y el azúcar, lo remueves con la cucharilla de Henk ¡jaja! y la vuelves a poner en el vasito, sin chuparla, claro! jaja! Esto me dio un asco horrible el primer día, pero actualmente estoy acostumbrada y me parece súper divertido cada vez que se lo cuento a alguien. Si hay un vínculo común en el grupo, es la cucharilla, todos podemos compartirla...

And now, finally, we arrived to the greatest part of this post. It is very normal that when you drink coffee you want to add sugar, milk, sweetener, etc and yeah, you have to stir it to get an homogeneous flavor of your drink, but...what would happen if in a group of around 100 people everyone were taking a small spoon for their coffees? Oh, no!! there would be a big problem with spoons and we would abandone the world in the absence of coffee spoons, haha! The easiest solution: Henk's spoon. What is this? Something very easy, Henk takes a small glass, he puts a small spoon inside attached to the table with a thin rope so the spoon doesn't get lost and once you have coffee, sugar and milk in your mug, you stir it with Henk's spoon and afterwards you put it back again in the glass, of course, without licking it, haha! I found it very disgusting at the beginning, but now I'm completely used to it and I find it really funny every time I tell the story to someone. If there is a common link in the group, this is Henk's spoon, we can all share it...

Eindhoven II (version española e inglesa)

¡Hola! En mi último post os hablé de como decidir venir a Holanda y os mostré algunas de las cosas más emblemáticas de la ciudad, aunque me quedan muchísimas cosas por enseñaros que espero hacer en los siguientes posts.

Hello! In my last post I told you why I decided to come to Holland and I showed you some of the most representative things in the city, but there are still lots of things I would like to tell you, so pay attention to the next posts.
Cada vez que me pongo a escribir, me arrepiento de no haber empezado antes este blog y es que ahora, las cosas de aqui no me sorprenden tanto ya, pero al principio si que me causaron "curiosidad".
Every time I start writing I regret I didn't start this blog before because now, I´m not as surprised as I was when I arrived here, when I was feeling "curious" about many new things.
Al venir de estancia Eindhoven, el alojamiento se puede arreglar muy facilmente gracias a la buena organizacion de la Universidad de aqui. La Universidad Tecnica de Eindhoven ofrece la posibilidad de vivir en estudios, casi todos bastante nuevos, donde hay varias modalidades posibles: un mini-apartamento con cocina y bano propio, un estudio con bano propio y cocina compartida o estudio con cocina propia y bano compartido. Ademas, para parejas con ninos tambien hay apartamentos algo mas grandes. El precio oscila entre los 375 euros a los casi 600 por mes, pero es mucho mas facil que buscar algo por ti mismo.

Finding housing when you come to Eindhoven´s University is relatively easy since the own University can arrange it. The TUE offers you the possibility of living in studios, more or less new, where you can find different options: mini-appartments with kitchen and your own bathroom, a studio with your own bathroom and a shared kitchen or a studio with your own kitchen and a shared bathroom. Moreover, for couples with children there are also bigger appartments. The price ranges from 375 to 600 euro and it is a quite easy way of finding housing.

Al principio y movida por lo megaescrupulosa que soy...por supuesto, pedi un estudio con mi propio bano...pero no!!! no habia!!! Oh Dios mio!! ahora que??? si esta sucio, si no lo limpian, que me dan arcadas todo el tiempo, que hago?? bueno, es lo que hay. Solo hay que compartirlo con una persona, con lo que si tienes suerte, nada tiene que ir mal. Al final, esta opcion en mi caso, fue la mas acertada porque encontre el mejor vecino que uno puede desear: Christoph.

At the beginning and because of I'm too scrupulous...I asked for a studio with my own bathroom, but that wasn't possible!! OMG!! and now what?! if it is dirty, if my neighbor is dirty, I even had nauseas when I thougth about it, but it was like that...In the end, this option in my case was the best because I found the best neighbour you can have: Christoph.

Hasta que no llegas al piso en cuestion, no conoces a quien va a ser tu vecino, por lo que la expectacion puede crecer considerablemente, asi que subiendo hacia el cuarto piso intente hacerme una imagen mental de una posible chica de otro pais con la que compartiria el bano, pero...gran sorpresa! al entrar en la habitacion, chocaron contra mi vista varios pares de zapatos, de hombre y gigantes!! el tio debe ser enorme, pense...uff! tiene pinta de ser muy serio y un medio ogro, pense. Efectivamente, cuando le vi y hablamos, era gigante, pero nada de ogro!!Cuando por fin le pude conocer, me pareció bastante majo y agradable y durante el tiempo que estuve allí viviendo no podría haber tenido un vecino mejor.

I don't know who is going to be your neighbour until you arrive there, so my expectations were increasing and increasing, so while I was going up to the fourth floor I tried to make a metal image of "a possible foreign girl" with I would have to share the bathroom, but...big surprise! when I entered in the room, I saw several pairs of huge shoes, male shoes and huge!!! I thougth, uf...he must be enormous, and serious and a bit like an ogre, haha! When I met him, of course I saw he was huge, but nothing compared to an ogre!! I could see how nice he was (is) and we had a nice friendship during the time I lived there.

Siempre nos llamábamos para ir al mercado y en cierta ocasión, me salvó casi la vida: cierto día, preparándome para ir a trabajar, me levanté y me fui a la ducha, cerré la puerta de mi habitación y con mi micropijama y la toalla me fui a la ducha. Al volver a mi habitación, la tarjeta para abrir la puerta no funcionaba...y allí estaba yo, chorreando, con los pelos enredaos, el pijama de florecitas y las chanclas...fuera de la habitación! menos mal que él lo oyó todo, se levantó y tuvo que ir a la oficina a recoger una copia de la tarjeta de mi habitación, que momentazo...el mismo día que rompí un tubo de RMN en el 500, justo 2 semanas después de llegar, pa no perder el tiempo!

We used to call each other when we were going to the market, just in case anyone needed something and once, he "saved my life": one day, I got up and I went to the shower, I closed my room's door, took my towel and I headed to the shower with my micropijama with flowers. When I went back to my room, the card to open the door didn't work, OMG! and there I was, soaked, with my nice hair, the flower pijama and the flip-flops...out of the room! Luckily he heard me, he got up and he had to go to the office to bring a copy of the card. It was a very nice moment...just the day I broke an NMR tube and everyone was waiting for me.

Después de unos meses, empecé a vivir en casa de Thomas. Aquí podeis ver un poco donde vivo. La primera vez que lo vi, como todo, me sorprendió, claro, era distinto a lo que estaba acostumbrada. Por supuesto, tuvimos que venir en bici, alrededor de 20 minutos y al llegar, como es normal en las casas holandesas, hay sitios para poner las bicicletas.Nuestro bloque es el que está a la derecha, pero es exactamente igual que el bloque que veis de frente y así es como estaba la cosa este invierno:

After some months, I moved to Thomas' house. Here you can see some pictures of the place I'm living. The first time I saw it, it was surprising, different from things I was used to see before, but still quite normal. Of course, we had to come by bike, around 20 mins from the center and when we arrived, I could find the typical bike lockers. Our block is the one on the right, but it looks exactly as the one you can see in the front. This is how it looked two months ago:

We live on the third floor, without elevator! more sports, but not so nice to bring the shopping up :)

A continuación, podeis ver algunas fotos de la casa. Al entrar hay un pequeño recibidor, de frente se pasa al salón, a la izquierda está la cocina y a la derecha el cuarto de baño. Aquí veis unas fotos del salón, con la lámpara que le gusta tanto a Thomas, todo en blanco y negro. Cuando nos mudemos podré decorar la nueva casa a mi gusto, jaja!

Here there are some pictures of the living-room, with the huge lamp Thomas loves, everything black and white. When we move I´ll decorate the new house with more colours, haha!

Finalmente!! la taza del water! esto sí que fue una sorpresa porque en Holanda la taza está separada del resto del baño y como es costumbre aquí, se puede encontrar fotos, revistas y un calendario con los cumpleaños, typical Dutch!

Eindhoven (versión española e inglesa)

Corría el año 2007 cuando empecé a pensar donde podía irme de estancia predoctoral. Cierto día, sin comerlo ni beberlo, hubo en Ciudad Real un simposium sobre nanotecnología donde Albert Schenning (mi actual jefe) estaba invitado a dar una charla. Me gustó lo que presentó, había ciertas similaridades con mi trabajo, pude conocerle, hablar con él y ¡¡decidido, allá que me voy, a Eindhoven! sí, donde el PSV Eindhoven ("Indhoven" pronunciado en Spanish).
It was 2007 when I started thinking about a possible European country where I could develop a small project during my PhD. When I still was in Ciudad Real, a nanotechnology workshop was organized and Albert Schenning (my current boss) was invited to give a lecture in my University. I really liked his lecture and I found some similarities with my work in Spain, so I could have a meeting and talk to him and I decided!! I'll go to Eindhoven!! yes, the city of PSV soccer team!!

Durante unos meses todo fue un cúmulo de preparativos para organizar casa, proyectos, alguien conocido por allí, etc, hasta que el día 2 de junio de 2007 cogí un vuelo de Ryanair y llegué a Eindhoven...donde aún sigo!
For some months everything was preparing about the trip and the months I was going to spend in Holland, the new project, housing, trying to find someone known there...finally, the 2nd of June I took a Ryanair flight and I landed in Eindhoven...where I'm still living!!
No tenía ni idea de lo que me iba a encontrar, como sería la gente, la comida, las costumbres, pero bueno, pensé que dentro de Europa no podría ser tan distinto. Al llegar allí, lo primero que pensé fue que me iba a entrar una depresión: todo estaba gris para una loca como yo que le gustan los colores, llovía, las casitas eran pequeñas, encima al principio no encontraba la civilzación yendo desde el aeropuerto a la ciudad, en fin...que pensé que 4 meses serían muy largos allí, yo como siempre, muy positiva...
I didn't have any idea about what I was going to find there, how people were, food, traditions, but I thought that being a country inside Europe it couldn't be too different...When I arrived there, my first thougth was really depressive: everything was grey (for a crazy colourful girl like

me), it was raining, the houses were small and different, uff...I thought they were going to be the 4 longest months of my life, so positive...

En el taxi, mi padre ya intentó hacerse amigo del taxiste nombrándole los distintos jugadores holandeses que juegan en el Real Madrid, por supuesto, la pronunciación de los nombres no era ni parecida, con lo que lo dejamos pasar :)
Al llegar a la ciudad todo cambió un poco, era "koopzondag" el primer domingo de mes, cuando las tiendas están abiertas, no hacía frío y todo el mundo estaba en la calle, parecía bastante animado.

Going by taxi from the airport to the city center, my father already tried to become friend of the taxi driver naming all the Dutch soccer players in Real Madrid, apparently the pronunciation was not completely correct, haha! When we arrived to the city, everything changed to me, it was the first Sunday of the month, so it was "koopzondag" when all the shops are open. It wasn't very cold, everyone was in the street sitting in the terraces and it looked quite amusing.

Poco a poco me fui acostumbrando a un país distinto con otro ritmo de trabajo, distintos horarios, por suerte conocía a mucha gente nueva que me ayudó mucho a integrarme, etc. Hoy por hoy, es una ciudad que me encanta, es tranquila, como la ciudad de la que provengo y me he acostumbrado muy fácilmente.
Little by lillte I got used to this new country, with a different rithm of work, etc, but fortunately I met a lot of people willing to help me to integrate in the social life here. Today, it is a city I really love, is quiet, like the city I come from and everything worked very easily.
